It should be understood by the three aspects: the Dharma that defiles, and how it defiles. First, the four dhyanas and the pure essence of the formless realms, when one abides in these samadhis, later they will be defiled by the four afflictions in their respective ways. As the Treasury of Knowledge says: "Worldly virtue, that is pure, that is experienced by it." Second, anger is abandoned from among the root afflictions, because it does not exist in the minds of the higher realms. Therefore, the four that are obscured and unindicated, namely desire, view, pride, and ignorance, are also the objects of the two higher realms. As the Compendium of Topics says: "What is affliction? Answer: The four unindicated roots, namely desire, view, pride, and ignorance." Third, when one abides in these pure samadhis, if attachment arises towards them, then what was previously virtuous becomes associated with afflictions. Similarly, when one attains these samadhis, one becomes proud, thinking, "I have attained this, others have not," and thus is associated with pride. When one attains these samadhis, due to confusion about the path and non-path, one thinks, "These are the paths to liberation, and they are very excellent," and one doubts what is the path to liberation, thus being associated with it. Relying on these samadhis, when one sees some boundaries of the past and future through clairvoyance, one develops wrong views such as the world is permanent, and thus becomes associated with them. Then, since the formless realm is not the basis of clairvoyance, how does view defile it? Although that is true, for the formless realm, if wrong views already exist in the continuum, when one attains these samadhis, one develops the view of cherishing evil views, thinking, "My view is supreme, and through its power I have attained this samadhi," thus there is no fault in defiling in this way. The assertion that there are four defilements is in accordance with the Vaibhashika of the Sunlit Land, as the Treasury of Knowledge says: "The Sunlit Land says four, these are desire, view, pride, and ignorance." The Vaibhashika of Kashmir asserts that among the afflictions, only the experiencer in whom desire is dominant is defiled. Then, are these the characteristics of dhyana and the formless realm of samadhi? These are associated with desire and so on, therefore they are not characteristics, if they were characteristics, then all afflictions
