Since one enters samadhi without interruption, it is said that the higher levels of dhyana do not have wisdom arising from thought, and the formless realm does not have wisdom arising from hearing. If that is the case, then when meditating on the support of the formless realm, the first attention has both hearing and thinking, while when meditating on the support of the form realm, there is no wisdom arising from thought. Furthermore, from the proximity of the fourth dhyana to the proximity of the peak of existence, since there is no joy and happiness of feeling there, it is only said that seeing the attention of abandoning joy as a virtue. The first attention of the proximity of the first dhyana is of the desire realm and does not belong to the higher levels, because the *Śrāvakabhūmi* says, "The attention of the mind of the unestablished ground distinguishes the coarse characteristics of the desires and the peaceful characteristics of the first dhyana, and that is called the attention of discriminating wisdom." By this reasoning, for the rest, if one meditates on the support of the lower ground, then the first attention should be considered as the lower ground. The way these proximities are established as the four paths is: In the *Compendium*, it says, "The attention of distinguishing characteristics and faith is included in the path of joining. Complete solitude and the ultimate joining are both included in the path of no interruption. Abandoning joy is included in all four paths. The attention of investigation is included only in the path of distinction." That is, joining is the initial effort, the path of no interruption is the direct antidote to abandonment and realization, the path of liberation is the experience of transformation immediately after abandonment, and the path of distinction is the realization of the distinction beyond that, so it is said in consideration of the fact that these attentions possess these characteristics. The third point is that if the attention of the result of the ultimate joining is considered to be the actual practice, then the ninth liberation path of the proximity is clearly pervaded by the actual practice. But the author of the *Treasury* believes that the ninth liberation path of the proximity of the first three dhyanas has two kinds of arising, the nature of the actual practice and the proximity 5, while the ninth liberation path of the proximity of the fourth dhyana and above is pervaded by the actual practice, as it says in the *Treasury*, "Or the dhyana that surpasses the three grounds, or the final liberation path of the proximity, the higher dhyana is not the proximity." That is, the author of the *Treasury* believes that the feeling of the proximity is only equanimity.

Because of the desire realm, the actual and proximate of the first, second, and third dhyanas have different kinds of sense faculties, so it is difficult to transfer the faculties. The rest (of the dhyanas) are determined to be only equanimity, so it is thought that it is not difficult to transfer the faculties. Thus, the recognition of the six mental activities of the proximate, as mentioned above, is based on the worldly path being free from desire from the lower ground, but the number of those six mental activities is not fixed. The seeing path and the cultivation path, which are without outflows, both rely on the proximate of the first dhyana, and the two are contradictory in terms of the aspects of tranquility and roughness. In particular, the seeing path cannot be used as an antidote to the abandonment of cultivation in the desire realm. In general, for the path of cultivating the upper and lower grounds with the aspects of desire and non-desire, it is believed that all manifest afflictions like desire can be abandoned. In this regard, the Vaibhashikas believe that both the afflictions of abandonment by seeing and abandonment by cultivation from the realm of nothingness downwards, and the Sautrantikas believe that the afflictions of abandonment by cultivation can be abandoned. However, upon careful analysis, the path cultivated by children in a tranquil and rough manner cannot completely abandon the manifest afflictions of abandonment by cultivation in the desire realm. Because the afflicted mind that relies on the desire realm cannot be reversed until the noble path is attained, and that is an affliction of abandonment by cultivation belonging to the desire realm. As the Thirty Verses say: "Wherever one is born, that is where one belongs." This means that wherever the basis belongs, its afflicted mind also belongs there. Through this reasoning, the remaining grounds should also be understood, and on this basis, the abandonment of the Sangha of the Sudden School should also be examined in detail. Those eight proximates, except for the first, are all pure, and the first has both pure and without outflows. Some consider it to have tasters and three, because it competes with the actual (dhyana). As the Abhidharmakosha says: "These are the eight proximates, pure, neither pleasure nor pain, the first is also noble, some are three." From this, it can be seen that the feeling of the proximate is said to be equanimity, which is not adopted here. The second aspect has three: the worldly path, the path beyond the world, and the analysis of their classifications. The first aspect has two: afflicted and pure. The first is: what is the basis to be afflicted, and by what is it afflicted.
