Thus, a Bodhisattva who enters correctly without fault will attain the path of seeing. Furthermore, Gendun Gyatso (དགེ་འདུན་དཀོན་མཆོག) in his commentary on the Uttaratantra, "The Jewel Ornament of Realization," says, "The Bodhisattva's seeing also arises on the first ground, because it is to realize the meaning of the Dharmadhatu pervading everywhere." The reason why this latter quote becomes a valid proof is that it is necessary to accept the realization of the suchness of things as subsequent attainment. In meditative equipoise, it is not permissible to assert differences in the way of realizing the nature of reality. If it were permissible, would the nature of reality, the object to be realized by seeing and meditation, exist as different entities? Or, although the nature of reality is not like that, is it realized differently by the mind? If it is the former, then it contradicts the statements that the divisions of the nature of reality are only due to the distinct characteristics of phenomena, and not due to the nature of reality itself. The nature of reality would also become the nature of many parts, like a pot and a cloth, so one should accept that the distinction is established inherently without depending on the characteristics of phenomena. If it is the latter, then the meditative equipoise of the great vehicle's noble ones would become a mistaken consciousness of the nature of reality, because it apprehends something that does not agree with the object, like the consciousness of two moons. Therefore, the meditative equipoise of the ten grounds does not apprehend the nature of reality with any elaborations such as the four extremes, and it is only the state of pacifying all of them that is merely labeled as freedom from elaboration or seeing the nature of reality. As it says in the Ratnavali: "Forms are not seen, feelings are not seen, perceptions are not seen, and consciousness is not seen. The Tathagata has taught that this is seeing the Dharma. When sentient beings speak of seeing the sky, how is the sky seen? One should examine this meaning. No other example can be given for seeing. Thus, the Tathagata has taught that seeing the Dharma is like that." It is said that not seeing obstructions like mountains is similar to the way of labeling seeing the sky. If so, what is the object of meditative equipoise? On this, there are two views: that the object of meditative equipoise is without appearance and with appearance. The first is as stated in the Bodhicaryavatara: "By familiarizing oneself with emptiness, one will abandon the habit of things. By familiarizing oneself with nothingness, one will abandon that later."

When and where it is said that there is nothing, the object to be examined is not perceived. At that time, non-existence is separated from its basis. How does it abide before the mind? When there is something and nothing, it does not abide before the mind. At that time, there is no other kind, and it is completely pacified without an object. Thus it is said. Moreover, in the intention of the Buddha, in the state of meditative equipoise, all conceptual elaborations cease, so there is nothing such as an object. Thus it is said. If asked, what is the meaning of seeing? The answer is: it means that knowledge does not arise in that object. Only the meditation of non-seeing is seeing. Because the moments of consciousness follow it, it is seeing. Thus it is explained. Secondly, both the Noble Liberation and the Teacher say that only the nature of reality is the object of meditative equipoise, and that meditative equipoise has the aspect of grasper and grasped, and that the two systems of being separate from the object are rejected at the time of the gathering of objects and wisdom, and that the object of non-affirming meditative equipoise, which is like an illusion of dependent arising without true existence, is explained. Moreover, it is not that the object and the object-possessor appear as different entities, but that the appearance experienced in the manner of self-awareness in meditative equipoise is empty of its own nature. They also do not accept that appearance is established in dependence on the nature of reality. Among these, the former is a great place of contention, so for the time being, the latter is accepted. Thus, the one who realizes reality as it is, in meditative equipoise, all clinging to phenomena is pacified, so he does not cling to anything and establishes it. Therefore, there is no difference in the way the eleven grounds realize the nature of reality in meditative equipoise. Therefore, it is reasonable to accept that the complete realization of reality in the Great Vehicle is also from the first ground. There are two parts to the second: presenting seemingly valid arguments, and refuting them with correct answers. The first is: the realization of the Great Vehicle's noble ones is unreasonable, because they do not realize the nature of reality. Moreover, the abandonment of abandoning all cognitive obscurations is unreasonable, because they do not realize the nature of all phenomena as free from elaboration. Moreover, the lineage that abides in its own nature is not a valid basis for the realization of the three vehicles to progress from higher to higher, because the nature of reality has no basis or dependent. The appearance of the object of meditative equipoise, which is like an illusion, would become truly existent, because it exists in the object of meditative equipoise of the Great Vehicle's noble ones.
