Thus, the distinctions of virtue and non-virtue, this characteristic of severing the continuum, the Buddhas declared as emptiness. Thus, the complete absence of self of phenomena exists only in this system, because it teaches that all phenomena are without inherent existence. Secondly, what are the twenty objects of emptiness? The answer is stated here: Emptiness is the basis of classification, and the nature of classification is considered to be twenty, that is, from the internal phenomena to the emptiness of otherness, the twenty are empty by their own nature. This is the reason for emptiness, and it is twofold. The meaning of emptiness of self-nature is also explained in the auto-commentary of the Entering [the Middle Way]: Saying that the eye and so on are empty by the eye and so on, it is said that the emptiness of self-nature has been completely clarified, not that the eye is empty because it is devoid of function, nor that it is empty of the nature of the grasped and the grasper, so it is not an emptiness of one without the other. Like that. The two ways of emptiness, that is also explained in its commentary: Is it the emptiness of the internal agent, the person? Or is it one, that is, on the eye and so on, there is no one, that is, the emptiness of things that are separate from the grasped and the grasper? It is not like the externalists who say that there are external objects, and the Mind-Only school. Like that. In the Eight Thousand Verses, the Great Vehicle of the Great Bodhisattva is like this: the emptiness of the interior, and so on, up to the emptiness of the nature of others, all twenty of these appear in one sentence. In the sutras, sixteen emptinesses are taught, and also separately, the last four emptinesses are taught. Considering that the sum of the two becomes twenty, the noble ones and the teachers made the number of twenty, and Shantideva, Abhayaradakirti, Anantabuddhashri, and others are also like that. If explained in detail, there are sixteen emptinesses, if abbreviated, there are the last four, and if extremely abbreviated, there are these two selflessnesses, as it appears in the commentary on the Entering [the Middle Way], which is the intention of the Entering [the Middle Way]. Among them, the internal, what is the internal emptiness? The so-called internal phenomena refer to the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Among them, because there is no permanence and no destruction, the eye is empty by the eye. Why is that? Because of its nature.

Therefore, in the manner of combining two reasons, it is declared that all twenty are emptiness. This is shown by the basis of emptiness, the manner of emptiness, the name of emptiness, and the reason for the name. The first is the six senses. The second is, in the "Sunlight," "Kuta is a collection, because the nature that is there is not visible, so it is Akutastha, that is, it does not exist in the collection. What will such a thing perish? Therefore, there is no perishing, because the nature of no birth and no cessation is its nature." Thus it is said. According to that, "Stha," which enters into the meaning of permanence, is the meaning of existence, and is blocked by "A," so it does not exist in the collection of causes and conditions, and there is no birth there, so there is no cessation either. Therefore, because there is no birth and cessation, the eye and so on are empty of it. In the commentary on the "Entering the Middle Way," the meaning of permanent existence and no destruction is explained in order as change and non-destruction. The appearance of impermanence and non-destruction is because when change is initially prevented, in order to dispel the idea that it will exist temporarily and then perish, it is said, "It is not destruction." Thus it is said. In the "Destruction of Harm" of the Hundred Thousand Prajnaparamita, "The meaning of not having those two is not having permanence and impermanence, therefore, the six senses do not have things in the ultimate sense, otherwise they would become things of those two." Thus it is said. The latter reason is also from there, "Because that is its nature, it means that the eye does not have the nature of the eye, that is its nature, it is not destroyed by other causes and made empty." Thus it appears, therefore, the reason that the eye and so on do not have permanent and impermanent things can be combined to establish. Similarly, for the remaining nineteen dharmas, the explanations of the two reasons, earlier and later, should be compared as explained here. The third is the emptiness of the interior. The fourth is, because the eye and so on are all internal dharmas. The exterior is the five objects not grasped by the mind. The two, interior and exterior, are the five objects collected by the basis of the senses, that is, because they are grasped by the mind and not collected by the senses. In the sutra, the six senses and six objects are made interior and exterior, and the two mutually...
