Among the three characteristics, only the completely imputed is what should be refuted. This is also stated in the Condensed Meaning of the Eight Thousand Verses: "With words such as 'non-existent,' all imputations are refuted." And: "Thus, that Buddha, speaking without having seen enlightenment, until the state of complete perfection, should be known here as eliminating imputations." Also, in the Pure and Possessed Sutra, it says: "By the nature of the completely imputed, everything is non-existent. Because of this non-existence, there is no abiding and no destruction, meaning there is neither permanence nor impermanence. Therefore, it is emptiness." This is stated in the commentary on the Inner Emptiness Sutra, and it is the same in the Supreme Essence. In the commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, it also says: "The non-existence of entities of persons and phenomena is emptiness. The existence of entities of that non-existence is also emptiness." Thus, the two selves are stated as what should be refuted. Therefore, the unconditioned, perfectly established, ultimately real, empty of all conditioned things, to consider it as the intention of the later Maitreya's teachings and the treatises of Shantarakshita, is merely the darkness of the foolish. If, in the Destruction of Three Categories, emptiness is taught as being empty of the eye of suchness, etc., with the eye of conceptual imputation and complete imputation, etc., is this emptiness in accordance with this position? If one wishes to say that this reasoning of emptiness must be explained by an Indian scholar, then one must agree that it is in accordance with the Destruction of Three Categories. Because the Commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses and the three Oral Instruction Followers, which are in accordance with this, all take suchness as the basis of emptiness and say that the completely imputed and the dependent arising are empty. However, no other great panditas of Madhyamaka and Chittamatra have ever taught in this way. Thus, this position and the Destruction of Three Categories, in making the perfectly established the basis of emptiness and the other two characteristics the phenomena that are empty, although only the names are the same, the meanings are completely different. In the Destruction of Three Categories, after establishing the three emptinesses, one thinks thus: "Is what is called emptiness existent in the form of a phenomenon, or is it non-existent? If one says that there is something called emptiness, then because of the existence of emptiness, there should also be non-emptiness, because without an opposing side, it is not proper to have an antidote. If there is non-emptiness, then all phenomena should become non-empty."
