The distinctions made in each section are also to guide future understanding of those specific phenomena, so they are emphasized, but not absolutely. Because the masters and the noble ones do not consider there to be differences in how they realize the nature of reality through the paths of seeing and meditation. The second (part) has two divisions: the general meaning and the specific meaning. The first (general meaning) has two divisions: the meaning-affirming and the Mahayana system. The first (meaning-affirming): The aggregates, elements, and sense bases are the basis of emptiness, and the permanent and singular self of the person, which is imputed by the non-Buddhists, is to be refuted. Thus, the self of the person does not exist, but its selflessness does exist, and that is also a refutation distinguished by the three or four truths that are to be refuted, such as the aggregates. As it says in the sutra: "Here there is no self or sentient being, this dharma arises from causes and conditions." And as it says in the Commentary on the Mind: "To avert the clinging to self, the aggregates, elements, etc., are taught." And as it says in the Compendium of Topics: "What is the characteristic of emptiness? If something is absent in something, then that is seen as empty of it, and whatever remains here is said to be here." Know it as it is. What is absent in what? In the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, there is no characteristic of permanence, stability, constancy, or immutability, and no self or what belongs to self, so they are empty of that. What remains? That is, there is no self, but there is selflessness, and emptiness should be understood in that way. And so on. As it says in the Differentiation of the Sugata Essence: "All conditioned things are momentary, empty of self and without an agent." Thus, the view of the meaning-affirming ones is stated. In short, most of the Mahayana teachings explain the selflessness of the person as it is, because it is common. Thus, they consider the self of the person to be empty of itself, but the dharmas of the aggregates, etc., are not empty of themselves, but are empty of other—the person. If we divide it even more precisely, as it says in the Blaze of Reasoning: Among them, the eight sections mentioned earlier, such as the Mahasanghika, and the later mentioned Sthavira, Sarvastivada, Vatsiputriya, Dharmottariya, and Bhadrayaniya, all assert selflessness, that is, the self and what belongs to the self that are asserted by the non-Buddhists.

And it is emptiness, all dharmas are said to be without self. The remaining five schools, such as the Sthavira school, say that there is a pudgala (person), the pudgala cannot be said to be the same as or different from the skandhas (aggregates), it is the samsara (cycle of existence) that is known by the six consciousnesses, it should be fully clarified, they say. Thus it is said. Secondly, there are two: the school that speaks of consciousness-only and the school that speaks of no self-nature. First, the other-dependent (paratantra) is the basis of refutation, the part that is imputed as the two selves is what is to be refuted, the part of the other-dependent imputed that is empty from the beginning is considered to be the perfectly established (parinispanna). As it is said in the Thirty Verses: Accomplishment is prior to that, constantly becoming non-existent. Thus it is said. Therefore, the imputed is empty of its own essence or characteristic, while the other-dependent and the perfectly established are empty by imputation, and it is never considered that they are empty by their own essence. Shantideva said: The nature of the imputed is not existent, and the nature of the other-dependent and the perfectly established is not non-existent, therefore it is free from the two extremes. And there are occasions when harm can enter into blue and so on, but not into clarity, thus preventing the appearance of blue and so on from existing in reality, showing that no reasoning can harm the clarity of consciousness that is separate from appearance. And they object to the statement that all dharmas are untrue and free from the extremes of existence and non-existence, Shantideva said: Furthermore, the Madhyamikas say that all dharmas being like illusions is the Middle Way. Thus, if these are proven to be non-existent by valid cognition, then no one can prove them to be existent. For what is not valid cognition, what need is there to even mention appearance? Everything is non-existent, so what is to be taken up and what is to be established? And they say that everything is neither existent nor non-existent, which is the Middle Way. That is also unreasonable, because existence and non-existence are characterized by mutual exclusion, because by negating one, the nature of the second exists, therefore it is unreasonable to negate both. Thus it is said. In short, the uncommon object of negation of this school is the self of phenomena, and that is considered to be only the imputed, and in the treatises of the Asanga brothers, in any undisputed place, the other two characteristics have not been established as self-empty.
