It is because of being born, actualizing, and not actualizing, and completely passing away from suffering. Thus it is said. Those who are born in the five Pure Abodes and pass away must meditate on the alternating meditations. The third is that, in order to pass away after going through two rebirths in the realm of form, they are non-returners. In this regard, from the perspective of the cause, it is practicing alternating meditations, and from the perspective of the result, it is going to Akanistha and the Peak of Existence. The first is that, in order to eventually pass away on the basis of Akanistha after going through two rebirths in the realm of form, they are non-returners. In this regard, there are three types: jumpers, half-jumpers, and those who die and transfer in all places. The Treasury of Knowledge says: Those who transfer upwards, they go to Akanistha after practicing meditation. They jump, half-jump in all places, and after death and transfer, they go to the Peak of Existence. Thus it is said. Among them, jumpers refer to those who, when they have accomplished the five alternating meditations, experience the taste of the first dhyana, and having declined from the latter three dhyanas, are born in the Brahma host realm, and through the power of previous habituation, practice the fourth dhyana, abandon the intermediate ones, and are born in Akanistha and pass away. Half-jumpers refer to those who, like before, are born in the Brahma host realm, abandon the intermediate ones, are born in the Pure Abodes, abandon some places, and pass away in Akanistha. Those who die and transfer in all places refer to those who, like before, are born in the Brahma host realm, and having gone through all other places except for the Great Brahma, pass away in Akanistha. Because they have accumulated the karma of being the sole master and unparalleled, and because it is a place of wrong views, noble ones are not born in the Great Brahma. This is what the Commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge says. According to the Mahayana view, that reason is not definite, so being born there is not contradictory, because the birth of the ripening fruit of a Bodhisattva who has attained a ground will be explained, so know it. What is the way to practice the alternating meditations, which are the cause of being born in these Pure Abodes? There are two marginal analyses of this: the basis of meditation, and the meditation that relies on it. The first is to meditate by relying on the mind of an Arhat and a non-returner who has attained the fourth dhyana. So, in what place does one meditate? In the auto-commentary, it says: First, one practices alternating meditations in the three continents of the desire realm, and later, those who have completely declined practice alternating meditations in the form realm. The second has three: the application of alternating, the measure of accomplishment, and the actual alternating.

Firstly, it is the continuous fourth dhyana without outflows, then the same with outflows continuously, and then entering the continuous without outflows. Similarly, gradually reducing the duration, two moments are without outflows, two moments are with outflows, and then again entering without outflows. Thus, initially cultivating the fourth dhyana because it is free from the eight faults, it is competent, and the samadhi is clear. As the Treasury states: "Initially, one cultivates the fourth dhyana." Secondly, after a moment of the fourth dhyana without outflows, it is with outflows, and when one can mix without outflows after that, it is accomplished. As the Treasury states: "It is accomplished by mixing with moments." Here, the explanation of mixing moments during the application and actual practice is the view of the Vaibhashikas. However, the Acharya's own view in the self-commentary states: "Except for the Buddha, no one can mix moments. Therefore, it is perfected by abiding in the three continuous dhyanas as long as desired." It should be regarded as such. Thus, initially cultivating the fourth dhyana, and later also mixing with other dhyanas. Thirdly, as a result, the cause for being born in the five Pure Abodes, cultivating alternating meditations, there are also five. What are they? From alternating three to alternating fifteen. Alternating meditation is not necessarily these five, because these five are only alternating the fourth dhyana, and it is also said to alternate with the first three dhyanas. What are the ways of alternating these? Small alternating three, as the self-commentary states: "Firstly, one manifests three minds: without outflows, with outflows, and without outflows." Like that. Then there are medium alternating six, large alternating nine, very large alternating twelve, and extremely large alternating fifteen. For these, the commentary only states: "The second is six, the third is nine, the fourth is twelve, and the fifth is fifteen." That's all. Regarding the way of alternating six, some say: "Do two without outflows, two with outflows, and two without outflows." Similarly, for alternating nine, also do three without outflows, and so on. This seems to be speculation unfamiliar with the treatises of the wise. In the Meaningful Clarification, it says: "The second is six, meaning these three: without outflows, with outflows, and without outflows, and without outflows.
