Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the teacher's statement is wrong. How could this complete great paṇḍita be mistaken about such a rough point? Fourth is entering the Arhat fruit: abandoning the eighth meditative abandonment of the peak of existence, and striving to abandon the ninth, is entering the Arhat fruit. These are as stated in the Ornament of Clear Realization, and it is also the intention written by Serlingpa. When Śerabhadra speaks of ascending rebirth, he says that the abandonment of afflictions is abandoned by the worldly meditative path, which is not the intention of both the noble one and the teacher. However, this seems to be the intention of the commentary on the method of counting. Fifth is the Pratyekabuddha: because of focusing on the Vinaya Pitaka of the Śrāvakas and manifesting one's own path, one becomes a Pratyekabuddha when a Buddha does not appear. In the Ornament of Clear Realization, it says: becoming a Pratyekabuddha, therefore it is understood that Arhats are not counted. If they are counted, then it is unreasonable not to count those with the name of Śrāvaka Arhat, because the reason is the same. In the Clear Words, it is explained that these last three are, in order, the most excellent Bodhisattvas who accomplish their own benefit, the benefit of others, and the benefit of both. In this way, there are five Stream-enterers, three Once-returners, ten Non-returners, the Arhat fruit, and entering the Pratyekabuddha fruit, totaling twenty. Therefore, seventeen are shown in the root text, and three are supplemented, which is the intention of this treatise and the Ornament of Clear Realization. It says there: The individuals who abide in the first and second fruits, and who enter the fourth fruit, are not briefly explained because they are easy to understand. The third has two: the general and the meaning of the branches. The first has two: the basis for the arising of the path of joining, the basis is the path of joining. The first has two, the first is the physical basis, in the self-commentary it says: Three are produced only in the human realm and in the three continents. Those who were previously produced also manifest in the realm of the gods. The fourth is: also produced in the realm of the gods, it is said. Therefore, it is necessary to arise as the basis for the arising of the path of seeing. The second is the mental basis, in the Treasury it says: Without interruption and special, meditative ground. Meaning the six meditative grounds, and two are also below, meaning that Venerable Myoyang and Warm Peak also believe that they rely on the desire realm ground. Especially Bo-

Regarding the path of approach, some say that, according to both the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, one relies on the fourth dhyana, and from the great accumulation path, one obtains the Dharma Stream Samadhi. As the Abhidharmakosha states, "Showing and Vairochana's enlightenment, all depend on one limit of dhyana." Thus, they say. According to this, not only the path of approach, but all the qualities of the Mahayana path after obtaining the Dharma Stream Samadhi rely on the fourth dhyana, which is too extreme. In particular, the formless liberations and the cessation attainment would also change accordingly, so it mainly relies on any of the six dhyana grounds. Second, there are three points: the essence, the divisions, and examining which is the discriminating wisdom. The first point has two: the common and the individual essences. First, in the Abhidharmakosha commentary on "born of meditation," it says, "These four aspects that conform to the definitive part are not born of meditation, hearing, or thinking." Thus it is said. However, saying that the path of approach is pervaded by what is born of meditation is because that is the main thing, but it is not that there is no hearing and thinking. As the Compendium states, "What is the path of approach? It is what is of the accumulation, and that is also the approach." Therefore, the morality of ordinary beings, etc., which are spoken of in the accumulation path, are also present in the path of approach, and the qualities of hearing and thinking are also spoken of in the accumulation path. In the Dharma-Dharmata Commentary, it also says, "The definitive understanding of this is included in all the paths of approach, relying on the proper attention based on the Mahayana sutras." The term "all" is distinguished by hearing, thinking, and meditating, so it can be determined by that. If it were not so, then the special wisdom of hearing and thinking in the continuum of the practitioner of the path of approach would become not the path to liberation. Second, following what is said in the Sutra Ornament and the Compendium, the individual identifications of the four, such as heat, are also spoken of in the Ornament Manifestation, so it is explained here as well. Among the four, the first is the heat: when a Bodhisattva is in equipoise, he does not see objects such as form apart from the expression of mind, but only sees the expression of mind appearing as the characteristic of self and general, which is the samadhi of obtaining appearance. It is also the first forbearance of definitive understanding of the Dharma. It is also like that.
