The first is reeds and wicks, the second is birch and bamboo, and the third is rice and sesame. Having said that, it is also said that for these, the former is thicker than the former, and the latter is thinner than the latter. If compared with the sutras, it would be correct if the former were thin and the latter were thick, because these selective examples arose to represent being filled with many Shravakas. The second has two, the general and the meaning of the branches. The first has five, explanation of terms, nature one or different, definite number, definite order. The first is: In the Compendium, it says, "What is the meaning of truth? Answer: The meaning of the nature that is not contrary to the teaching, and the meaning that seeing it becomes the cause of complete purification, is the meaning of truth." That's how it is said. Among them, the first meaning is that it is called truth because it abides as the Thus-gone One taught it as impermanent, etc. This is from the point of view of the object. The latter is that seeing it as it is, it can generate wisdom that is not inverted, which is from the point of view of the subject. This is just the meaning of the word truth. Why are suffering, origin, cessation, and path called noble truths? In the Hearer's Ground, it says, "Because the noble ones know and see that these truths are as they are, with true practice, while the childish ones do not know or see them as they are, therefore they are called noble truths." For the childish ones, although these are true in nature, they are not realization, but for the noble ones, both are true. The noble ones see how the truths are true, so both wisdom and meaning are true, so it is noble, while for the childish ones, it is true in meaning, but not realized as such in wisdom, so it is not established as truth. Like this. That meaning is also quoted in the Commentary on the Treasury, "What the noble ones say as happiness, that is the suffering of others, what others say as happiness, that is the suffering of the noble ones." Some say that two are the truths of the noble ones, and two are both noble and the truths of the noble ones. This records how other schools establish the noble truths. The second has two, entity and definition. The first has two, defiled and purified truths.
