Hasn't that compassionate one already elucidated all the meanings of the eightfold realization sequence and the Prajñāpāramitā from the extensive, intermediate, and concise versions of the Mother of the Buddhas? Since that is the case, there is no need to compose anything for the sake of any of the three types of disciples, because the benefit has already been accomplished for them. Thinking in this way, such a thought arose. What is the necessity of giving rise to doubt? It becomes a limb or cause for engaging in treatises with reasoning. Here, we shall examine a little the nature of a treatise that possesses the four necessities, etc., and the manner of its etymological explanation. The first part has two points: presenting the views of other systems and identifying the valid position. The first is: In the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa], it says, "The eighty-four thousand aggregates of Dharma, Whatever the Sage has spoken, Those are either words or names, Those are included in form and formations." In that, "whatever" indicates that names and words are merely symbolic. Both of them consider the collection of names, words, and letters to be the nature of the Buddha's word, and they also say that the two of them, in order, consider existence and non-existence to be non-associated and associated, respectively. Its meaning is that although both agree that the collection of the three is the nature, one considers the collection of the three to be a continuum of sound generalities, therefore it is non-associated; the other considers those three to be the sound self-characteristics of linguistic activity, therefore it is included by form. Therefore, it should not be determined that if it is a name, it is included in formations; if it is a word, it is included in form. In The King's Son, it is also in agreement with "whatever," but the difference is that the Abhidharma masters explain that the essence of the Buddha's word is included in both form and formations. Of those two, the former agrees with the view of the Vaibhāṣika, and the latter agrees with the view of the Sautrāntika. Both schools must consider the essence of the Buddha's word to be the collection of the three, and those three are also said to be non-associated substantially existent for the Vaibhāṣika, and sound self-characterized for the Sautrāntika. Those two systems consider treatises to be the nature of material objects, while the logicians consider that which directly expresses to be sound generality, and that to which one adheres to be sound self-characterized. The second part has two points: the definitions of the Buddha's word and treatises. The first is: The two form bodies that appear as teachers of the Dharma, and the twelve branches of scripture that appear as what they teach, are established as merely the other appearances of disciples, therefore all the Buddhas'
