From the Abhidharmakośa: 'Having exhausted the seven and eight faults, one life with interruption and entering the stream.' This explains that if one has not abandoned the seven afflictions, even if one is of one life, one is not with interruption. In the Compendium, taking one birth is explained as taking birth as a god, and in its commentary, the meaning of one interruption is explained as being interrupted by one birth. What is not encompassed by gradualness in this is that, having been stated, generally, a once-returner may be born once each as a god and a human in the desire realm, but even so, one will not become a non-once-returner, because one does not take birth in the same kind of birth. The third is entering the stream, which has two aspects: entering and abiding. The first is that the once-returner strives to abandon from the seventh to the ninth. The second is that when the one who has entered the stream abandons the ninth abandoned by meditation, one becomes a non-returner. As the Abhidharmakośa says: 'Because those nine are exhausted, one is called a non-returner.' Among them, there are two types of abiders: those who only have the fruit and those who have special qualities. Furthermore, there are two destinations for non-returners: going to the higher realms and passing away in the same support of the desire realm. The first has three aspects: approaching the form and formless realms, and contemplating their supports. The first has three aspects: in the intermediate state, passing away after being born, and transferring upwards. The first is that the non-returner is born in any of the sixteen intermediate states of form, except for the Great Brahma, and passes away in that support. For this, there are three: the intermediate existence just formed, the appearance of seeking birth not yet arisen after formation, and passing away without remainder when thinking of going to birth. The second is that the non-returner connects the consciousness in the sixteen birth places of the form realm and passes away with remainder in that support. For this, there are three: passing away immediately after being born, passing away with activity, and passing away without it. The difference between these is that, in order, the path arises naturally and with effort, with effort but the path does not arise naturally, and not possessing both. This is what the Vaibhāṣika school asserts. In the Sutra on the Seven Goings of Noble Beings, one should proceed in the order of non-action and action as previously stated. The difference between these two is that the path arises naturally without effort and does not arise. The first is that the path arises very naturally and the subtle increase is very small, so it is different from the second.
