When one obtains the sixteenth (moment) after that, one becomes a once-returner and a non-returner fruition. The two previous stream-enterers, the dull-witted faithful and the sharp-witted follower of the Dharma, when they later obtain the fruition, they become known as the faithful and the seer. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "At the sixteenth, that is the fruition. At that time, the faculties are sharp or dull. By faith, one attains conviction, and by sight, one attains realization." If one has abandoned the six aspects, why is the sixteenth mind called a once-returner, and why is it not an entry into non-return? Because at the time of the sixteenth (moment), one only abides in the fruition, and has not entered the path that makes the fruition special, therefore it is not called an entry into the later fruition. Similarly, it is also the case for the non-returner. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Having attained the fruition, there is no attainment of a special path. Therefore, for the sake of making a distinction in the fruition, one who does not strive is not an enterer." So, when one enters the later fruition, are those two fruitions transcendent or not? Some say that because the transcendent fruition pervades abiding in the realization of the sixteenth (moment), it is only a fruition and has no special qualities. However, there is no scriptural authority that demonstrates that. Striving to obtain the later (fruition), because it is a transcendent fruition, there is no harm, so it is transcendent. If that is the case, when a once-returner obtains non-return, does that also become transcendent? That is not accepted, because if it is a transcendent non-returner, one must abandon the ninth level of desire realm afflictions before the path of seeing. Therefore, there is a transcendent once-returner who enters non-return, and a non-returner who enters Arhatship. The non-return obtained by the once-returner, and the Arhatship obtained by the non-returner, are not considered transcendent, because in the case of transcendence, all the fruitions are the first fruitions that have not been previously experienced, as explained in the commentaries and sub-commentaries. Furthermore, those two are preceded by detachment from desire. Although the stream-enterer of once-return and non-return, and the stream-enterer of non-return and Arhatship are of the same basis, they are not stream-enterers preceded by detachment from desire, because that stream-entry is definitely a path of seeing, and it contradicts the fruition obtained from it being transcendent. So, are those gradual? No, because the previous fruitions were before

Not abandoning, and the sixth and ninth of the desire realm afflictions were abandoned before the path of seeing, and because those two fruits are manifested simultaneously at the sixteenth. Therefore, it seems that many Sanghas will come, whether they are sudden or gradual. The second is four: Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, Arhat. The first is divided into two: entering and abiding. The first is: the Hearer who abides from the heat to the after-tolerance of the path, who has not abandoned the sixth affliction of desire. If we divide it, it is divided into two: one who has not abandoned even one of the cultivation-abandonments before the path of seeing, and one who has abandoned any one from one to five. The first boundary is considered to be taken from the path of connection, as stated in the Abhidharmasamuccaya: "What is the entry into the fruit of stream-entry? It is the person who abides in the fifteen moments of the mind of the path of seeing in accordance with the part of determining." Also, the commentary considers the path of connection that can generate the path of seeing on one seat, as it says: "In accordance with the part of determining, from one seat until the first fruit is not obtained." The Vaibhashikas consider the first boundary from the Dharma-tolerance of suffering, as stated in the Treasury: "Those fifteen moments, unseen for seeing, the path of seeing. The faculties are sharp and dull in those, followers of faith and Dharma. If the cultivation-abandonment is not abandoned, enter the first fruit, destroy between the five." The second is: the Hearer who has obtained the sixteenth on top of the previous abandonment. The difference is that if you take it in order, there are seven returns and two births from one family to another. The first is: some think that it is just a fruit-dweller. However, the commentary and explanation do not mention that other than not abandoning even one of the cultivation-abandonments, they do not strive to abandon. This also has three differences: the difference of realization, the difference of abandonment, and the difference of birth. The first is: abiding in the fruit of stream-entry. The second is: not abandoning even one of the cultivation-abandonments of desire. The third is: taking seven births in desire. Therefore, as it says: "The fruit-dweller has not exhausted the cultivation-abandonment. Such a sequence is seven returns." The self-explanation says that the person who abides in the fruit, what should be abandoned through cultivation.
