Therefore, it is like this. For example, like a rabbit's horn. Similarly, as stated in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: The arising of all things, whatever is unreasonable, that very cessation of all things is also unreasonable. Existence and non-existence, these two, are not reasonable in one thing. For a thing that does not exist, cessation is also unreasonable. Just as the head cannot be cut twice. Therefore, arising and ceasing are merely imputed, and do not exist in ultimate reality. As the Destroyer of Harm quotes these earlier and later scriptures, explaining the reasons for refuting arising and ceasing, this appears to be no different from the reasoning composed by Master Shantarakshita and the Venerable Aryadeva. Moreover, this asserts that all things are without arising and ceasing, while the Mind-Only school believes that the things said to be without arising and ceasing are the completely imputed, and that the absence of arising in dependence on others means that they do not arise by their own nature, but arise from other conditions. How can these situations be the same? Furthermore, defilement is also non-existent in ultimate reality. If defilement were the nature of all things, then because the nature cannot be abandoned, it would never become completely pure. And if purity were the nature of things, then it would never become defiled, because the nature cannot be abandoned. Moreover, if all phenomena were defiled, would they become defiled from a state of already being defiled, or would they become defiled from a state of purity? If it were the former, then defilement would be meaningless, because it is already defiled, so there is no need to produce it there. Or it would not become pure, because it is already defiled, so it needs to be produced there again and again. If it were the latter, it would also be unreasonable, because it is contradictory. That is, it is unreasonable for defilement and purity to occur simultaneously in one thing, because it is impossible for two contradictory natures to exist in one thing. The same reasoning can be applied to purity. Therefore, defilement and purity do not exist in ultimate reality, but on the Suchness that is pure by its very nature, in the state of ordinary beings, it is labeled as defilement, and in the state of liberation, it is labeled as purity, which is merely imputed by thought, as stated in the Destroyer of Harm. This is also what is stated in the Root Verses on the Middle Way:

It is never reasonable to change into another like me. It is said. One who is temporarily bound will not be liberated, and one who is not bound will not be liberated either. If bondage is being liberated, then bondage and liberation will occur simultaneously. It is said. One without characteristics will not have characteristics, and one with characteristics will not be without characteristics. It is said, and this seems to be the same as the key point of reason. Therefore, the Mind-Only School believes that the basis of bondage and liberation is the clear light mind, which is true. And from this, both afflictions and purification are merely conceptual designations, how can they be compared? Third, it is to admonish with the truth of cessation as the subject. What is that? The emptiness of all phenomena, from "no form" onwards, the word "also" includes the four aggregates, six sense bases, eighteen realms, ignorance, no birth, up to no birth between old age and death, no cessation of ignorance. The word "also" includes cessation up to old age and death. Realization of Buddha does not exist, and between what is to be realized and enlightenment does not exist. The word "also" includes the four truths, four fruits, solitary realizers, etc., showing that these do not exist in the ultimate truth. The reason for this is also that emptiness is the nature of conditioned phenomena, the nature of arising and ceasing, abandonment and attainment, defilement and purification. The difference in states, the decay of many becoming one, the increase of one becoming many, etc., are included, because they are separated from the three times. Emptiness is unborn and unceasing, not all afflictions, not purification, not decrease, not increase, not past, not future, not present. Whatever is like this, for it, from "no form" to "Buddha does not exist, enlightenment does not exist." For those who cling to manifesting the cessation of contaminated cessation, this sutra shows that all phenomena from form to enlightenment do not exist, which is for the purpose of dispelling clinging to what is to be attained. Fourth, it is to admonish with the truth of the path as the subject. What is that? Although there are three admonishments divided into path, reasoning, and ascertainment, the great lord summarizes the nature of the path, the non-discriminating reason, into three ascertainments, which is better. First, both the practitioner and what is practiced are empty in nature. The six perfections of what is practiced, such as generosity.
