The mind that possesses [that quality] is called bodhicitta, it is the mind of a Bodhisattva. Because it is said in such an explanation, Vasubandhu considers the essence to be the mind. In the Ornament Sutra it says: The aspirations of the steadfast are, the mind with intention. Saying that the mind with friendly intention is aspiration, I think the brothers' thoughts are the same. The second aspect has two parts: the noble one and his followers, and views that disagree with that. The first is, the noble one says: What is called bodhicitta, the mind is consciousness, that is, discernment. What is consciousness? It is the consciousness of the mind, because the mind focuses on all white dharmas, so it exists in the mind. Having said the word "arising," it is known that it causes the unarisen to arise, therefore, the dharma realized by the mind is to indicate the meaning of the object of the initial stage. After explaining the meaning of mind and arising in this way, the consciousness of the five gates is only looking outward, and considering that the alaya consciousness and afflicted mind are unspecified, they are not established on these, but the consciousness that can serve as the basis of all white dharmas is explained as the standard. In addition, a debate is raised about explaining the desire for enlightenment as bodhicitta, and it is said that desire is only a imputation on bodhicitta, not the real bodhicitta. In the commentary on the Twenty Thousand Verses, the standard is adopted in the same way. This teacher also listed the debate responses that the Twenty Thousand Verses made clear in both the Ornament Manifestation and this treatise, and said that desire is an imputation, and the mind is the nature. Abhayakaragupta also listed the debate responses in the Tathāgatagarbha. Candrakirti, in the Moonlight Commentary, takes consciousness as the standard. The Clear Words says: As for what is called bodhicitta, here some people think that what is mainly indicated is bodhicitta itself, that is, intention, etc. Some people think that it is an imputation on the helper that makes bodhicitta grow, that is, giving, etc. Some people think that it is an imputation on the result, that is, the one and only path, etc. This explanation follows the teacher's point of view, but it is somewhat rough. The second is, Buddhashri says: In reality, striving itself is the nature of discernment, so it is just a convention, otherwise it is taking the result as the cause, and the helper with

Even if it is said to be named as "unique," how can it accomplish its own nature? Having refuted the views of the noble ones and the teachers, because they regard the desire to pursue meaning itself as the mind, they consider the mind and mental factors to be the same entity. Shantipa, however, considers both mind and desire to be so. In the Compendium of Trainings, it says, "What is called the object of generating the mind of enlightenment, the mind is the mind and the desire." And, "Thus, the desire that aims at perfect enlightenment for the sake of others is the characteristic of generating the mind of enlightenment." Then, what meaning did the noble ones and teachers see in considering it as the mind? They thought that if it were a mental factor, the meaning of the word 'generating the mind of enlightenment' would not remain, so they did so. In particular, the teacher, in the Ornament for Clear Realization, when explaining the characteristics of generating the mind of enlightenment, said, "Great joy and great effort, great meaning and great arising, are the mind of the Bodhisattva, a mental factor with two meanings." They thought that the last line referred to the mind. In the Ornament's Illumination, during the debate, this was quoted, saying, "When the mind that appears to be in accordance with the mind arises in a special object, is it not the generation of the mind of enlightenment?" Therefore, they thought that this scripture showed that a mind with the mind as a friend is the generation of the mind of enlightenment. Among them, great joy is not being tired of practicing austerities for a long time with armor-like diligence. Great effort is accomplishing the armor as it is with the diligence of application. Great meaning is for the benefit of oneself and others. Great arising is accomplishing great enlightenment. Among them, the first two lines show the actions of the person, the latter two lines show the actions of meaning, and the qualities of completely holding the fruit. These two are aimed at enlightenment and benefiting others. The second is the mind that arises in accordance with the desire for perfect enlightenment for the sake of others. The third has four: distinguishing from the aspects of nature, mode of arising, boundary, and views. The first is the two minds of aspiration and engagement. This has two: establishing other systems and explaining the reasonable side. The first is, Yeshe Zhabs said: The aspirational mind of enlightenment is for all sentient beings.
