This means that these eight things are definite, neither lacking nor excessive. Second, why are there definitely eight things? Because for a person to attain Buddhahood, it must be determined in three aspects: the object to be known, the path to be practiced, and the result. Among them, the first aspect is determined as three wisdoms, the second aspect is determined as four applications, and the third aspect is determined as the Dharmakaya. As the "Lamp Illuminating the Meaning" says: "The object of knowledge is the three wisdoms, the time of practice is the four applications, and the ultimate result is the Dharmakaya." So, why is the object of knowledge determined as three wisdoms? For example, when a merchant hears that trade is profitable, he will start to do it. First, in order to generate the desire for the result, the omniscient wisdom with the benefit of oneself and others is taught. After hearing it, one will start to do it, so one needs the path wisdom. And understanding the wrong path also depends on the base wisdom, so the base wisdom is taught next. As the text says: "At the time of hearing and thinking, the result and the cause, and all the unfavorable aspects, are completely determined to be perfect." So, why is practice determined as four applications? It is not enough to just determine the three wisdoms, so one must practice. And for the realization of the path, there are two types: to generate what has not yet arisen in one's own mindstream, and to make what has already arisen more special, so it is determined as four. Sarvākāra is to obtain what has not been obtained, Topa is the time of obtaining, Anupūrva is to generate the special of what has already been obtained, and Kṣaṇa is just the time of accomplishment. So, cause and effect, one cycle is enough, why do you need two? If there is no free cause and effect, one cannot obtain the Dharmakaya that is effortlessly and spontaneously accomplished. If there is no stable cause and effect, one cannot obtain the omniscient wisdom that one can realize everything when one realizes one dharma. Therefore, both are needed, which is what the previous wise men said. It can also be explained in this way, if realization has not arisen in the mindstream, just knowing cannot destroy what is to be abandoned, so one needs Sarvākāra to generate it. And what has already arisen in the mindstream and has become free, that is Topa. Even if it has already arisen in the mindstream, if it is not nourished with a clear mind, just generating it cannot make the path reach the ultimate, so it needs Anupūrva and Kṣaṇa, which are cause and effect.

So it is. Therefore, it can also be said that it is definitely fourfold. In that itself, it says: 'At the time of practice, it is application, temporarily it is the support of the fruit, and it is perfected by the ultimate of the cause.' Thus it is. The meaning of gradually cultivating the three wisdoms is: even one thing like generosity is connected with other virtuous dharmas such as morality in sequence and practiced. The moment is: like this, after the mind has been familiar with it for a long time, when one inexhaustible is manifested, then all can be manifested, this is the ultimate time. All aspects are: mainly in equanimity, after becoming accustomed to the meaning of the essence, it is the cause of generating manifestation. Gradual is: mainly in subsequent attainment, it is the meditation of contemplating the manifestation of what has arisen and what has not arisen. In this way, after determining through hearing and thinking, the fruit of practicing with application is exhausted in the single dharmakāya, so the number is definite. The third is, in the 'Condensed Meaning Lamp': 'The order of arising sequence is, first because of hearing and thinking, its object has been said before. That is also first knowing the fruit, then the cause and what is to be abandoned, determining in sequence. The order of the four applications is also, because all aspects of perfect enlightenment exist in the accumulation path, so it is first declared. Then the other three arise in sequence. Like this, this is the sequence.' Although it is said like this, the previous scholars said that the explanation of the three wisdoms and the four applications and the dharmakāya are the order of meaning, this is reasonable. In this regard, the order of explanation is that if it is explained in that order, it is easy for the listeners to understand, this is one. The order of meaning is the order of cause and effect. In this regard, all aspects and the peak are cause and effect, and the peak and the gradual are, because the peak is obtained, so the teacher explains to cultivate the gradual, but it is not the fruit produced by thought. The fourth has three, the three wisdoms, the four applications, the boundary of the dharmakāya. The first is, for bodhisattvas, it is unreasonable to say that there is base wisdom and path wisdom, and for buddhas, to say that all three wisdoms have characteristics. In the praise, it is said that the support and function of the three wisdoms are different, and in the 'Body Arrangement' it is also said: 'The all-aspect wisdom of the capable one.' And, 'The path wisdom of the wise bodhisattvas is that.'
