That is thinking and meditation. The nature of these ten actions is an immeasurable accumulation of merit. As it is said, the Dharma is the nature of the ten actions of the Sutra Pitaka. This is the saying of great ones, but it is very unreasonable, because it reverses the necessity of realizing enlightenment and the necessity of it arising in the mindstream, and also confuses the main and non-main necessities. How so? Since the Sutra Pitaka has already explained the stages of enlightenment, there is no point in composing this treatise. In response to the argument that exists in their minds, one cannot easily realize enlightenment from the Sutra Pitaka, but the treatise can do so, therefore it is necessary. This seems to be the meaning of the treatise. Easily realizing enlightenment is explained as practice, and the meaning seen by the wise is that enlightenment arises in the mindstream, but it is explained as merely the necessity of understanding. Furthermore, composing the treatise is not only for the sake of realizing enlightenment, but for the sake of generating the path in the mindstream, but it is said that realizing enlightenment is the main thing, and practicing the meaning of the Sutra Pitaka is not the main thing, which is wrong. Therefore, although eliminating the doubts of connection is the main thing, the main necessity of composing is that enlightenment arises in the mindstream, not just eliminating doubts. Therefore, according to the view of the great virtuous feet, the two explanations and the two summaries, and as Buddha Shri said, the latter two verses show the necessity of understanding the meaning of the Sutra Pitaka, and the necessity shown before that should be explained as the necessity of enlightenment arising in the mindstream, and then the latter should be regarded as secondary and the former as the main necessity. These two necessities are called direct and indirect necessities, as said by Youthful Glory. The explanation is that the four things to be taught, such as necessity, which are mentioned in the connection, and the words that explain them are, that is, what was just mentioned. The organization of the body is also like that. Here are four points: what is said, relationship, necessity, purpose. The first point is that what is shown as what is to be said is what is said in this. From where? From the three forms of the Mother Sutra: extensive, intermediate, and concise. With what is it shown? With the Sutra Pitaka: Vanquishing Mara, Fearless, Fortunate Aeon, Transcending Existence, Wisdom, Free from Burden, and

The vessel of immeasurable qualities, may these qualities greatly increase, Blessed One. Thus, the Blessed One first subdues others with the miraculous transformations of body, such as walking in the sky. Then, with the transformations of mind that encompass all, knowing the realms, thoughts, and latent tendencies, he demonstrates the flow of mind, inspiring faith. Then, with the teachings that accord with speech, he bestows the three kinds of transformations that follow demonstration, showing the path to all beings. Where? The first of the eight Abhisamayas, namely, the Omniscient One, is the path realized by the Buddha. If it is asked: Are there not eight objects of expression in the treatises? Why is only the Omniscient One explained? There is no fault, because this first one closely represents all the remaining seven Abhisamayas. Moreover, this representer is also taken as important, being the main object of expression, and is therefore explained. In the Ornament of Realization, it says: The order of the eight Abhisamayas, such as the Omniscient One, is the complete path that obtains the superior and definitely excellent dharmas without inversion. Thus, it is said that all eight objects and the basis of the path are the same, which is slightly different from this. Explaining the path and the Omniscient One separately is not the intention of either. Thus, the appearance of the aspects of the eight objects in the mind is the reality, and the Abhisamayas that arise in the minds of individual yogis are the objects of attachment. Secondly, what Maitreya connects is the connection of this. What does he connect? The expresser, the Ornament, and the expressed, the path and the result, both completely. How is it done? The eight objects are the means of knowing, and the Ornament is the means of the knower, that is, in the manner of what is to be accomplished by them, the agent and the action. This is merely a representation; in reality, everything depends on the necessity and need of the expressed and the expresser. Former scholars said that the expressed and the expresser of the Sutra are connected by the Buddha, and the expressed of the treatise. Thus, although this treatise connects the expressed, the Abhisamayalankara says: It is better to explain that the root is connected by implication, and the commentary explains it. Otherwise, if connections and so on are asserted, it will become unconnected.
