Some say that it is necessary to have the four requirements, etc., and to enter after certainty of validity (pramāṇa) has arisen. Others say that this treatise should not be composed, because it does not possess the requirements, etc., like the treatise of the crow's foraging. In preventing the occasion of composition, whatever possesses the four requirements, etc., should be composed, like the medical treatise. This treatise also possesses the four requirements, etc., and by preventing doubt, reversing the prevention of the occasion of composition is the necessity. Some say that the great Brahmin Delightful Maker and Buddhaśrī say that making the letters of the text beautiful by arranging the necessity and connection is the necessity. The teacher Dharmottara considers it necessary to dispel the four doubts of unchanging meaning by relying on speech and to generate the four doubts of changing meaning. The second is that the first is not reasonable, because the words of an ordinary person are likely to be mistaken, a special person cannot be understood by validity, validity harms words not made by a person, and especially the two connections between word and meaning are not established by validity, so it is not reasonable to generate certainty of validity in the expressed object from mere speech. The second and third also prevent the former, but however, when showing that it possesses the four requirements, etc., it is not appropriate to deny the second, because it reverses the doubt that composition is meaningless and generates doubt of changing meaning. If one thinks that only beauty is necessary for the third, then it is appropriate to deny it, because it is not the main necessity. If one thinks that beauty is a secondary necessity, then there is nothing wrong, because by arranging the necessity and connection, one can make the body of the treatise beautiful. However, explaining beauty as a necessity is not timely. Therefore, the necessity of this is good according to the views of the teacher Dharmottara and this teacher, namely, to dispel the four doubts of unchanging meaning that this treatise has almost no expressed object, necessity, ultimate necessity, and connection, and to generate the four doubts of changing meaning that these four are more likely to exist, so that intelligent people enter the treatise. As it is said: Because those who seek meaning in the world also enter through doubt. Like that. Certainty arises for the dull, and doubt arises for the sharp, and discrimination is also made.

It is similar to that. Then, how does one enter a treatise from doubt? Before the body of the treatise, because the treatise has four necessities, etc., when vowing with words of necessary connection, those with intelligence will give rise to doubt. When that arises, they will think, "Just as this word has vowed, having entered the treatise to examine whether it exists or not, if it exists, then enter, and if it does not exist, then return," and having thought thus, they will enter, so it is not in the middle and end to place the words of necessary connection before the body. If that is the case, why is it not arranged before the homage as well? That is inappropriate, just as considering the date after shaving the head, it is not in accordance with custom to pay homage after starting work. Furthermore, homage generates joy, and from that, one can also enter into detailed examination of the subject matter of the treatise, etc., so the words of necessary connection are arranged after the homage. The teacher Dharmamitra explains that it is very good. The second part has three: identifying the four necessary connections, the way they are shown by words, and the certainty of the number of four things to be taught. The first part has three: merely words, words of necessary connection, and the necessary connection that exists in the body of the treatise. The first is: all true words can be counted as the four necessary connections, the thing to be taught by the words that show the truth of the meaning is the subject matter, from that, understanding it is necessary, from that, the accomplishment of the purpose of the person is the ultimate necessity, and the connection between those earlier and later is the connection. The second is: the subject matter, necessity, ultimate necessity, and connection are the subject matter, from the words, doubt or certainty arises in the intelligent is the necessity, from that, entering the treatise is the ultimate necessity, and the part where the latter does not arise without the former is the connection. The third is shown in the text. The second is: just as directly showing and indirectly showing the main and the secondary, the ultimate necessity is directly shown and the others are indirectly shown. If one does it by whether the words are covered or not, the connection is indirect and the other three are directly shown. The third is: the four obstacles to an intelligent person entering a treatise are: like this, thinking that this has no necessity, and even if it does, it cannot accomplish it, and even if it can, because it is not desired by the noble ones, and even if it is, thinking that there is another easier way to accomplish it, or thinking that it is not related to this.
