The tenth Bodhisattva ground is the Dharma Cloud ground. Why is it called that? Because like clouds, with two things pervading the Dharma of the sky, it is the Dharma Cloud. That is, with the clouds of Samadhi and Dharani pervading the basis of attainment, like the sky, it is the Dharma Cloud. Where is it? As mentioned above, or like that, having transcended the nine grounds, that is, after the qualities of abandonment and realization of those grounds are completely enhanced, with what aspiration wisdom does one abide in the tenth ground of the Buddha, that is it. Where is aspiration wisdom? On this, in the Ornamentation Manifestation, it says: With which ground of the Buddha, with which wisdom of the basis of power over actions and so on does one abide, that is it. Here it speaks of the wisdom of the basis of the four powers. In the Clear Words, it says: Abiding with aspiration wisdom means that although one has not yet attained the great Bodhi of self-nature, by the power of aspiration, one abides with the wisdom of the practice of manifestly and completely awakening through the twelve deeds, such as descending from the abode of Tushita. Thus, it explains the method of attaining Bodhi through the twelve deeds by the power of aspiration. If that is the case, in the Sutra of the Ten Grounds, it says: In the first ground also, one attains Bodhi by the power of aspiration, so why is that not counted as the Buddha ground? There, becoming a Buddha, because it is less than a number such as a hundred, how can it be compared to this? Thus, it refutes the argument. Then, why is this ground called the Buddha ground in this treatise, but not called the Perfectly Complete Buddha? For the Bodhisattva of the tenth ground, one should only say Buddha, and one should not say Perfectly Complete Buddha, because the Sutra says so, so it is in accordance with this. If combined in that way, then this scriptural authority is suitable as a source of knowledge. Some people think that if it is the tenth ground of a Bodhisattva, it contradicts the Buddha ground. As an answer to this question, for the tenth ground, because the Bodhisattva has entered the Buddha ground, one should only say Buddha, but because the qualities of the Buddha, such as powers, are not complete, it is not a Perfectly Complete Buddha, because the Twenty Thousand Verses says so. For what is said, the Buddha ground is reasonable, then, the distinction of the word "only" in the previous sentence, how can this later sentence, as a source of knowledge that the tenth ground and the Buddha ground are not contradictory, be established?

Regarding where it is said in the Ornament of Realization, "It is taught in the Twenty Thousand Verses"? This is considering the reality of the preceding words and the meaning of the following words. The reason for its meaningfulness is that in that sutra, it says one abides in the Buddha-ground and is referred to as the Tathagata, but the term "perfectly complete Buddha" is not added. If we examine its meaning, it must be understood as not having all the qualities of the Buddha, such as powers, complete. Likewise, in the Twenty Thousand Verses, it says, "Abiding on the tenth ground of the great Bodhisattva is referred to as the Tathagata." It means that all the qualities of the Buddha, such as the powers of attaining the ground of perfect and complete enlightenment, are fully possessed. Other schools also say, "One should say 'Tathagata,' but one should not say 'perfectly complete Buddha.'" So, is the tenth ground the actual Buddha and Tathagata? Some people think that although this is the actual Buddha, it is not the complete Buddha, which is the meaning of the previous scripture. However, because on this ground, one obtains the same continuous and spontaneous accomplishment of activities as the Buddha, it is said to be the Buddha and Tathagata, but because one has not obtained the abandonment and realization attained by them, it is not real. As it says in the Twenty Thousand Verses, "The tenth ground is the Tathagata." So, what does it mean? Because one abides closely by the activities of the Tathagata, one is called the Tathagata, but not because one has realized the mind of the Tathagata. And, it is the same in the Commentary on Valid Cognition. Thus, these two and Shantarakshita and other Dharma friends clearly stated that they are not the actual Buddha. Although these two are equally not real, they are given the names of Buddha and Tathagata, but the term "perfectly complete Buddha" is not used, which is to show that the activities are the same but the abandonment and realization are not the same. Second, what are the nine grounds to be transcended? The lineage that is initially determined to attain enlightenment as a Shravaka, etc., is the lineage ground. What is included here by the "etc." of the Shravaka, and what is this ground for? Shantarakshita only said, "Having the lineage to be liberated from suffering is the lineage ground," and nothing more, and it is also widely known.
