The almsman thinks, "How much food can I get from this house?" So he raises his head and doesn't leave, this is the almsman who thoroughly begs. If these two are separated, there are thirteen qualities of practice, and if not separated, there are twelve. As an antidote to attachment to many foods, "sitting in one place," sitting in one place and not getting up after eating; sitting for food, not eating until all the food needed to sustain life has been taken, thinking, "With this I can live"; and "not taking afterwards," taking and eating everything all at once afterwards. As an antidote to attachment to many clothes, living with three robes (saṃghāṭī, uttarāsaṅga, antarvāsa), the "three-robed one" who does not hold more clothes than these; the "felt-robed one" who holds three robes and all remaining clothes, all made of wool, or as stated in the Moonlight, wearing wool and coarse hair, etc., is called the "felt-robed one"; and the "rag-heap-robed one" who discards clothes thrown in the garbage heap, picks up unclean clothes soiled by excrement, etc., takes the thread, washes and sews them, changes the color, and then holds them. These two are for abandoning attachment to soft and fine Dharma robes. To abandon attachment to bustle, the "monastery dweller" who lives in a monastery a league away from the village; the "tree-dweller" who lives under a tree; the "uncovered one" who lives without a roof; the "graveyard dweller" who lives in a place where the living and the dead are abandoned. These three are for abandoning attachment to dwelling places. As an antidote to attachment to the comfort of lying down, the "sitter" who sits cross-legged on a chair or small chair, or on a place covered with grass, passing the time, not leaning on the back or cushion; and "living as it is," laying down grass and leaves once, and dwelling on it, not changing or repairing it again and again, this is to abandon attachment to cushions, bedding, and coverings. These are like those in the Hearing Place and Moonlight. Some say that the latter two are categorized as conduct, and therefore explain dwelling places as four types. Secondly, for example, uncombed wool cannot be made into thread, but the opposite can. Similarly, if one is attached to alms, Dharma robes, and dwelling places, the mind cannot be used for practice, and there are no qualities.
