Seeing sentient beings creating evil deeds and uttering unpleasant words, one will not be completely discouraged by laziness in accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings. The sutra says that in order to accomplish the merit of maturing sentient beings and purifying the Buddha-fields, even if one remains in samsara, one will not be discouraged until the completion of omniscience. In the Ornament of Clear Realization, it says that for the sake of doing the benefit of sentient beings, one will never be discouraged, and these two are not contradictory. Because the former refers to what basis, and here it refers to what causes one not to be discouraged. Shame and embarrassment are respectively relative to oneself, not taking the non-virtuous Dharma to one's own mind; relative to others, not taking this to heart, this is called the five. The second is realization, which is to obtain. Where is it realized? In the third ground, the Illuminating Ground. Why is it said that way? Because "the appearance of Dharma is great, therefore it is called the Illuminating Ground," because one seeks immeasurable Dharma with the power of samadhi, therefore it is said to make a great appearance of Dharma for other beings. By what is it realized? Like the five purifications mentioned before, just as mentioned before, it is certain that one purifies with the wisdom that does not discriminate the self-nature of Suchness. In this way, not discriminating self-nature refers to, just as "fame, gain, and respect without pride, self-nature is non-discrimination," it appears in the explanation of no pride. In the Treatise on Complete Purity, it says, "Self-nature without pride means, because one is not satisfied with this," it refers to not being satisfied with the five dharmas. The fourth has two, the first is, the six lines of forest dwelling and so on. The great bodhisattva dwells on the fourth ground, and should completely uphold and abide in these ten dharmas, and should not abandon them. Which ten? Just like "that is, dwelling in a solitary place" until "without attachment to all things." The second has two, the nature of each purification, and the way to become purification. The first is forest dwelling, in the Ornament of Clear Realization, it is said to be separated from the Hinayana mind, and the sutra also says that the meaning of dwelling in a solitary place there is that separation is superior. If speaking from a general point of view, dwelling in a solitary place refers to a place one yojana away from the village. As the Abhidharmakosha says: form, name, time, edge, dust, letter.

, a moment, an extremely small dust particle, and a dust particle, similarly, iron, water, rabbit, sheep, and ox, dust in sunlight and lice, and that which arises from that, similarly, a finger joint is called seven times, twenty-four fingers are an elbow, four elbows are a bow. Five hundred of these are the distance of a shout, that is called a monastery. Eight of those are called a yojana. Thus it is said. Bodhisattvas must cultivate both superior and inferior solitary places, therefore it is not contradictory to the sutras. Having few desires is: not having the desire to manifestly obtain gains that one has not previously obtained, thinking, "How wonderful if I could obtain them." Here, it means not having desire even for enlightenment, either for one's own benefit or as an object. Being content is: not seeking to obtain even more than the gains one has already obtained, thinking, "How wonderful if I could obtain even more." Here, it means not being arrogant even if one obtains the object to be obtained, such as the omniscient mind. This is in accordance with what is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Not being greedy for what is obtained, being very desirous for what is not obtained, the opposite is the antidote to that," and this is also considered to be what is explained in the Sunlight Commentary. The teacher Vasubandhu considered that both of these are equally greedy for what is not obtained, therefore they cannot be distinguished by definition, but are distinguished by being unhappy with obtaining a small amount of inferior things, and not being satisfied even with obtaining a large amount of superior things. However, the sutras say that one does not generate desire even for enlightenment, and that one is not arrogant even if one obtains omniscience, therefore the statements of the noble ones and the teachers also accord with the view of the sutras. Cultivating pure discipline also has two aspects: the uncommon superior and the common ordinary. The first is: not abandoning the tolerance of definitive understanding that is not afraid of the profound meaning of freedom from elaboration. The second is: perfectly maintaining the twelve qualities of cultivation, beginning with the practice of begging for alms, that is, abiding in its deity. What are these twelve qualities? They should be understood through their individual distinctions and common verbal explanations. The first is begging for alms, monastic robes, and dwelling places, and three and six, that is, in order to counteract attachment to good food, being content with whatever gains one obtains from familiar households, eating only as much as one needs, and begging for alms sequentially in each household.
