This is refutation done through negation. The Sutra states: 'Here, there is no self or sentient being; this dharma arises from causes and conditions.' Also, the Mind Commentary states: 'To counteract the clinging to self, aggregates, elements, etc., are taught.' Furthermore, the Compendium states: 'What is the characteristic of emptiness? It is that where something is absent, it is truly seen as empty of that, and whatever remains here is present here.' Thus, it is thoroughly understood as it is. What is absent where? In the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, there is no characteristic of permanence, stability, constancy, or immutability, and no self or what belongs to self; thus, they are empty of that. What remains? It is that, as there is no self, the selflessness is present, and emptiness should be comprehended.' And so on. Also, the Differentiation of the Tathagatagarbha Sutra states: 'All conditioned phenomena are momentary, empty of self, and without a maker.' This is like setting forth the view of the meaning-assertors. In short, the majority of the Mahayana teachings on the selflessness of persons are like this, because it is common. Thus, it is asserted that the self of a person is self-empty, but the dharmas of the aggregates, etc., are not self-empty, but are empty of another, i.e., empty of the self of a person. If analyzed even more closely, the Blaze of Reasoning states: 'Among them, the eight groups mentioned earlier, such as the Mahasanghikas, and the later ones, such as the Sthaviravadins, Sarvastivadins, Vatsiputriyas, Dharmottariyas, and Bhadrayaniyas, are those who assert selflessness, i.e., the self and what belongs to self, which are posited by the Tirthikas, are empty, and all dharmas are said to be selfless. The remaining five groups, such as the Sammitiyas, assert the existence of a person, i.e., the person is said to be neither the same as nor different from the aggregates, is knowable by the six consciousnesses, and is to be clearly shown as being in samsara.' So it is said. Secondly, there are two: the system of those who assert consciousness-only and those who assert the absence of inherent existence. First, the dependent nature is the basis for refutation, the part that is imputed as the two selves is what is to be refuted, and the part that is primordially empty of the dependent and imputed is considered the perfectly established nature. As the Thirty Verses state: 'Accomplishment is the first of that, always.'

What is it that has ceased to exist? Therefore, the imputational nature is empty by its own nature or characteristics, while the dependent and thoroughly established natures are not considered empty by imputation, but by their own nature they are never considered empty. Shantipa said: 'The nature of the imputational is not existent, and the nature of the dependent and thoroughly established is not non-existent, therefore it is free from the two extremes.' And regarding blue and so on, there are instances where harm can occur, but not regarding clarity. This is to negate the appearance of blue and so on as existing in things, and to show that no reasoning can harm the clear part of knowledge that is separate from appearance. It is wrong to say that all phenomena are untrue and free from the extremes of existence and non-existence. Shantipa said: 'Furthermore, the Madhyamikas say that all phenomena are like illusions, and that this is the Middle Way. Like this, if these are proven to be non-existent by valid cognition, then no one can prove anything to be existent. For something that is not valid cognition, what need is there to even mention mere appearance? If everything is non-existent, then what is there to take up and what is there to posit? To say that everything is neither existent nor non-existent is the Middle Way, but this is also unreasonable, because existence and non-existence are mutually exclusive characteristics, so by merely negating one, the characteristic of the other exists, therefore it is unreasonable to negate both.' In short, according to this system, the uncommon object of negation is the self of phenomena, and it is considered to be only the imputational nature, and in the treatises of the brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu, the other two characteristics have never been established as being empty of self anywhere without dispute. Among the three characteristics, only the imputational nature is the object of negation, as it is said in the Condensed Meaning of the Eight Thousand Verses: 'By words such as "non-existent," all imputations are negated.' And then, 'Thus, the Tathagata, speaking of not seeing enlightenment, up to the completion, know that here the imputations are eliminated.' And in the Adorned Sutra it is also said: 'By the nature of the imputational, everything is non-existent, and because it is non-existent, there is no abiding and no destruction, no permanence and no impermanence, this is the meaning. Therefore, it is emptiness,' this appears in the commentary on the Sutra of Inner Emptiness, and it is the same in the Supreme Essence. It is also said in the commentary on the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes:
