And, because thoughts lack loving-kindness and do not possess the means of the perfections, no one can be freed from sorrow, so those whose minds are pained by compassion accomplish for others the four kinds of happiness encompassed by the six perfections. Like this, when giving alms, because desires are fulfilled, one obtains the happiness of the present; abiding in discipline, one obtains a body in a good rebirth, so one obtains the happiness of the future; abiding in patience, diligence, and meditation, because one definitely accomplishes a result that accords with the cause and effect, these three obtain definite happiness; abiding in wisdom, one obtains definite goodness, never turning back from samsara, so one accomplishes lasting happiness. One who possesses the means of the six perfections generates samadhi, so one obtains calm abiding that focuses single-mindedly on the benefit of others; having obtained that, one generates insight, and insight realizes that the object of calm abiding is unobtainable; when focusing on emptiness with insight, one might fall into the Lesser Vehicle, so one needs skillful means and wisdom, the path of union that does not fall to the extremes of samsara and nirvana; possessing the union of the path, it is for the sake of benefiting sentient beings with omniscient attention, so below that there are skillful means; understanding this is for the sake of studying the collection of wisdom, so from there one obtains the wisdom that realizes emptiness; becoming accustomed to this, one can benefit sentient beings with correct wisdom and samadhi, thereby generating merit, so from there one obtains merit; becoming accustomed to the two accumulations, one can obtain the path of seeing, etc., by striving in the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, as well as the paths of meditation and no-more-learning, and also the first two paths. Moreover, the path of no-more-learning and the path of accumulation are generally just distinctions of the collection of paths. What is appropriate at the moment is the path of joining of the great supreme Dharma and the two paths of seeing and meditation. Possessing the path is because through the power of contemplating the meaning of the letters A, etc., in many kalpas, the memory of the cause of teaching the Dharma will not be interrupted, so from there one obtains the meaning of words and so forth, as well as secret mantras, and the dharanis that are the cause of patience. So, what is the nature of these dharanis like? Here there are four: essence, division, function, and boundary. The first is divided into two: the common essence is, in the Great Commentary, it says: the nature of dharani is the nature of memory and wisdom, that is, the difference between memory and wisdom

It is called "The One with Possessions Dharani." Thus it is. For the uncommon nature, it becomes the cause of obtaining forbearance, as well as mantra, word or dharma, and the dharani of meaning, there are four in total. Among them, the first is, for the letters such as Ara Pa Tsana, contemplating with delight on the meanings of arising, ceasing, appearing, and non-existence of things, etc., when the contemplation is completely perfected, forbearance without fear arises for that meaning, and the memory-consciousness that becomes its cause is the dharani of forbearance. Therefore, one should not only work on forbearance itself, but also on its cause. In the "Destruction of Harm" of the Hundred Thousand Verses, it says: "When contemplating the samadhi that is the cause of obtaining such forbearance, wisdom and mindfulness become the dharani that is the cause of obtaining forbearance." Also, in the "Destruction of Harm" of the Three Mother Sutras, it says: "The dharani that becomes the cause of obtaining forbearance." Furthermore, from that, It is also explained in this way how to generate this dharani: Reciting "Tadyatha. Idi Midi. Kidi Bhikshana Tya. Padani Svaha. Thus. Idi Midi. Kidi Bhikshana Tya. Padani Svaha.)" Afterwards, thinking, what does this mean? If, after observing, one does not find the meaning expressed by these words, then one determines that "nothing to be expressed" is its meaning to be expressed, and one cultivates the separation of what is expressed from what can be expressed. Taking this as an example, one also makes such intention for all dharmas, and when one sees that all dharmas are empty of all concepts, one realizes that all dharmas are inexpressible, and thus great joy arises, and at that time one will be able to obtain the dharani. By the power of obtaining the dharani, immediately great forbearance arises that is in accordance with the arising of the first ground, and because it is forbearance for the ultimate meaning, it is called forbearance. The second is, because the Bodhisattva has obtained mastery over samadhi, in order to stop the epidemics, disasters, conflicts, sins, etc. of sentient beings, with such special rituals, one prays that this matter be accomplished, and with the blessing of samadhi and aspiration, one abides for a long time in accomplishing this matter as if blessing. The memory-consciousness that accomplishes it in this way is the nature of dharani. The letters of the mantra, named by the place for the one with the place, or by the fruit for the cause, are called the dharani of mantra. Also, the "man" of mantra means wisdom, and the "tra" means protection, therefore wisdom and compassion are knowing that (suchness) and protecting beings, so it is secret mantra. Because it is the basis of omniscience, it is secret.
