Oṃ. The third is the three: love etc. that focus on sentient beings and phenomena, and that focus on the absence of focus. The first of these is that compassion etc. arise by focusing on a sentient being, the object of the arising of love etc., or on one that has become the nature of the substance of a person. The second is that although the substance of the sentient being who is suffering is not established, love etc. arise by focusing on the sufferer who is merely the nature of a phenomenon. The third is love etc. that do not even focus on merely a phenomenon, but focus on suchness that is free from grasping and being grasped. Alternatively, the objects of these are wanting to encounter happiness, being tormented by suffering, and wanting not to be separated from happiness. The mind of an afflicted person is the object of the first, and the treatises that teach the immeasurable, and suchness are the objects of the latter two respectively. As stated in the Ornament: "Those of the steadfast greatly enter into the desire for happiness, those tormented by suffering, and happiness, those afflicted, and their treatises, and its suchness." That is to say, the first is for ordinary beings, the second is common to hearers and solitary realizers, and the third is for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as stated by Śākya Blo. In the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence, it is said: "The love of a Bodhisattva who initially generates the mind is focused on sentient beings. The love of a Bodhisattva who has entered into practice is focused on phenomena. The love of a Bodhisattva who has obtained forbearance of unborn phenomena is focused on the absence of focus." Thus, the three stages of the Bodhisattva's own path are established. The fourth is in the Destruction of Harm in the Hundred Thousand: "It is called immeasurable because it focuses on immeasurable sentient beings, and because it becomes the cause of immeasurable accumulations, and because it becomes the cause of obtaining immeasurable phenomena, and because it becomes the object of immeasurable wisdom." What is said in this way is the explanation of the individual words. By meditating on these, one is born as a Brahma god, so it is also called the abode of Brahma. The third has three: connecting the context, general explanation, and detailed explanation that is difficult to understand. The first is that the third accumulation practice is taught below the entering practice, because as previously taught, after practicing entering the Great Vehicle, accumulations arise, so it is the order of meaning. The connection of the sutra is that from the practice of understanding, it is developed by Subhūti.
