In the Compendium, it says: When (these) that aid the samadhi of the first dhyana, such as investigation and analysis, enter in order to enable the dhyanas to aid their own ground and become completely pure, why did the Blessed One teach it as the name of movement? It is said that it is taught in relation to other grounds, but not in relation to one's own ground. Thus it is said. The differences of these dhyanas are also stated in the Compendium, as it is said: What is the difference between the first dhyana and the second dhyana? It is said that there is a difference in the complete perfection of samadhi. What is the difference between the second dhyana and the third dhyana? It is said that there is a difference in the complete perfection of aiding. What is the difference between the third dhyana and the fourth dhyana? It is said that there is a difference in the complete perfection of purity. Thus it is said. Thirdly, why are the dhyanas established with five limbs and four limbs? The Compendium of Topics says: It is for the sake of the limb of antidote, the limb of benefit, and the limb of the place of both. Like this, the four dhyanas are, in order, the antidote to investigation and analysis and extreme joy, as well as the three of mindfulness, knowledge, and equanimity, as well as mindfulness and completely pure equanimity, these are the limbs of antidote, because they abandon the afflictions of the lower grounds. Moreover, this is also the continuum of the antidote of the proximate concentration, and at the time of the actual practice, it only serves to lengthen the distance of the lower grounds, and is not the actual antidote to abandonment. The limbs of benefit are, in order, the union of joy and bliss, and bliss, and the feeling of equanimity, these are the benefits obtained by overcoming the lower grounds with the antidote. The limb of the place of all is samadhi, because it generates the antidote and the benefits. Therefore, from the perspective of these three, it is not that there is no samadhi of absorption that is not any of these fixed-number limbs, otherwise, the nine mental factors, such as mind and attention, that are similarly endowed with these limbs, would be nothing, because it is not the samadhi of dhyana, and it cannot be anything else. Thus, because investigation and analysis are abandoned, it is the second dhyana, because joy is abandoned, it is the third dhyana, because bliss

Because of abandoning and establishing it as the fourth dhyana, it is said that the dhyanas transcend the lower grounds through the door of the limbs. The second has four: infinite space and consciousness, nothingness, and the peak of existence. The first is: When the yogi attains the fourth dhyana, he sees the faults of form and the virtues of the formless, and in order to prevent the perception of form, he only meditates on the perception of space that is separated from characteristics such as color, shape, and touch. When the form that appears as blue, yellow, etc., and the obstacles that appear as walls and houses, etc., and the various perceptions that appear as clothes, decorations, gardens, mountains, etc., all disappear, even if one has faith in them, they will not arise at all. The object of focus of the approximation and the main practice here is also as stated in the Hearer's Ground: As long as one has not entered into the main practice, one should only focus on space. After entering into samadhi, one should focus on space itself and the aggregates of one's own ground that are different from it. During the approximation, one also focuses on the aggregates of the lower ground, just like that. One should also understand the reasoning for the others. The second is: Seeing the perception of space as coarse, in order to prevent it, one believes that only the consciousness with space as its object pervades everything. The third is: Seeing the perception of consciousness as coarse, in order to prevent it, when seeking the object of form and formlessness, one finds nothing, and then believes that there is no object of focus. The fourth is: The idea that there is nothing is also seen as coarse, and in order to prevent it, one believes that the coarse thought is not existent, and the subtle thought is not non-existent. These cannot establish the limbs like dhyana, as stated in the Compendium: The formless ones are peaceful, because they have the same taste, so there is no establishment of limbs. Thus, they abandon the previous object aspects and enter into each of the later ones. Therefore, by focusing on the formless ones, it is called transcending the lower grounds. The third is, as stated in the Compendium: The first dhyana is cultivated as small, medium, and large, therefore there are three births of the first dhyana. Just like the first dhyana, the rest are also the same, the births of the dhyanas
