Because I do not possess (this ability). The Abhidharmakośa states: "Equanimity is the sole virtue." And it says: "For those with afflictions, there is no joy, no superior insight and awareness, no mindfulness and equanimity of pure recollection." Second, there are the mundane virtues of meditative concentration and the formless realms, which are called pure or completely pure because they are free from the pervasive clinging of their own ground. As the Compendium states: "What is complete purity? The pure meditative concentrations and the formless realms are also called completely pure because they are virtuous." These are divided into four: declining, abiding, excelling, and definitive. The Abhidharmakośa states: "Pure declining and so forth, there are four kinds." These, in order, are in accordance with the arising of afflictions of one's own ground, the purity of oneself and the higher ground, and the arising of the unpolluted path in one's own entry. As the Abhidharmakośa states: "The arising of afflictions and one's own ground, the higher ground and the unpolluted, are in accordance." Moreover, since the peak of existence has no higher ground, the excelling aspect is abandoned, and all others are combined with these four. The second is the four concentrations and the formless realms, and the first three, totaling seven, are the support for the path that transcends the world, but not the peak of existence, because the unpolluted path cuts off the clarity of its own object, and this ground is because the movement of consciousness is extremely unclear. As the Compendium states: "The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is worldly because the movement of consciousness is completely unclear, therefore it is called without characteristics." As the Blessed One said: "To whatever extent the Blessed One enters into concentration with consciousness, to that extent he knows everything." This shows that as long as the movement of consciousness exists, there exists the unpolluted knowing of everything. Although this is explained in this way in the upper and lower Abhidharmakośa, this teacher says that when śrāvakas meditate, it is because they are unskilled in means, but when bodhisattvas meditate on this, because they are skilled in means, it will become unpolluted. Generally, only the proximity and the actual basis of the first dhyāna are divided into two differences, and nine unpolluted states are taught. The third has three: the limbs of meditative concentration, and the analysis of the aspects of the formless realms, and the explanation of the results of meditating on these. The first has three: the difference between substance and imputation, the nature of the limbs, the determination of the number.

Homage! Firstly, in general, the limbs of dhyana (meditative absorption) are eighteen in terms of names. As stated in the Abhidharmakośa: The first [dhyana] has five, vitarka (conceptual thought) and vicara (analysis), joy, happiness, and samadhi (concentration). The second has four limbs, adhimoksha (conviction) and joy, etc. The third has five, upeksha (equanimity), mindfulness, samprajanya (clear comprehension), happiness, and sthiti (abiding). The final [dhyana] has four, mindfulness, equanimity, and neither-pleasure-nor-pain samadhi. So on and so forth. The Vaibhashikas (a school of Hinayana Buddhism) consider these to be eleven substances: vitarka, vicara, joy, happiness, samadhi, adhimoksha, mindfulness, samprajanya, volition equanimity, and the substances of happiness-feeling and equanimity-feeling. According to the higher ones, joy and happiness are one substance, and adhimoksha is the nature of mindfulness, samprajanya, and equanimity, so they consider it to be nine substances, and the rest are nominally existent. Alternatively, all happiness can be concluded as the tranquil feeling of the mind-consciousness wheel, counted as one substance, and thus it becomes eight substances. Secondly, among the four, the first is: among the five limbs of the first dhyana, vitarka is merely seeking the essence. Vicara is detailed examination, both of which arouse all internal expressions. These two, in the other three dhyanas, although they do not exist in a seed-like manner, they exist in a universally arising manner, which is explained from the level of vitarka and vicara. Both vitarka and vicara can be established as either attention or wisdom. Joy and happiness, in order, the Vaibhashikas consider them to be mental pleasure in feeling and the happiness of physical pliancy in mental factors. The Abhidharmakośa says: The first [dhyana] is, physical pliancy is happiness. And, because of the two Agamas (scriptures), joy is mental pleasure. Thus, if happiness is considered as feeling, it cannot be bodily feeling, because there is no sense-consciousness level in the dhyana of meditative absorption, because sense-consciousness is distracted outwards. Nor can it be the feeling of the mind-consciousness wheel, because joy is also mental pleasure in feeling, and if happiness and joy arise simultaneously, it will damage the sameness of substance, and if they arise sequentially, then the first and second dhyanas will not be five limbs and four limbs respectively, because the limbs arise simultaneously. Thus, it is thought. Regarding this, others in the Abhidharmakośa commentary say: The sense of happiness arising from the mind does not exist, because in all three dhyanas, only bodily happiness is established as a limb.
