Ro. In general, for practitioners who meditate on the desire realm and the non-desire realm in an upward and downward manner, it is believed that through this path, all manifest afflictions like those of the desire realm can be eliminated. Among them, the Vaibhashika school believes that both the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and those to be abandoned by cultivation from the realm of nothingness downwards can be eliminated, while the Sautrantika school believes that only the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation can be eliminated. However, upon careful analysis, practitioners who meditate on calmness and vividness in a childlike manner cannot completely eliminate the manifest afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, because the afflicted mind that relies on the desire realm cannot be reversed until the noble path is attained, and this belongs to the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm. As stated in the "Thirty Verses": "Wherever one is born, that is where one belongs," meaning that wherever the basis of reliance belongs, the afflicted mind also belongs to that place. Through this reasoning, the same should be understood for the remaining realms, and based on this, a detailed analysis should also be made regarding the abandonment by the Sangha of the sudden path. These eight preparatory concentrations, except for the first, are all pure, while the first has both pure and uncontaminated aspects. Some believe there are three, including those with taste, because they oppose the main practice. As stated in the "Abhidharmakosha": "These are the eight preparatory concentrations, pure, neither pleasure nor pain, the first is also noble, some say three." The feeling of equanimity mentioned here in the preparatory concentrations is not adopted here. The second has three aspects: the mundane path, the supramundane path, and analyzing their classifications. The first has two aspects: afflicted and pure. The first is: it should be understood by knowing what is the basis for affliction, what is the dharma that afflicts, and how it afflicts. The first is: the four concentrations and the essence of the formless realms are pure, because when they are in equipoise, they will later be defiled by the four afflictions in their respective ways, as stated in the "Abhidharmakosha": "The virtue of the mundane, pure, is experienced by it." The second is: abandoning anger from among the root afflictions, because there is no anger in the minds of the higher realms. Therefore, the four that are obscured and not disclosed are desire, view, pride, and ignorance, and they also belong to the upper two realms, as stated in the "Compendium of Topics": How are afflictions?

Then, as it is said, the four roots of the unpredetermined are desire, view, pride, and ignorance. Third, when abiding in the samadhi of the pure ones, attachment arises towards it, and although it was previously virtuous, it later becomes associated with afflictions. Similarly, when obtaining these, one becomes proud, thinking, "I have obtained this, not others," and thus possesses pride. When obtaining these, due to being ignorant of the path and non-path, one thinks that these are very likely the path to liberation, and doubts whether it is the path to liberation, and thus is associated with it. Relying on these samadhis, when one sees some limits of the past and future through clairvoyance, one develops the wrong view of considering the world as permanent, and thus becomes associated with it. Then, since formlessness is not the basis of clairvoyance, how does one become afflicted by view? It is true, but nevertheless, for formlessness, the wrong view already exists in the continuum, and when one obtains these samadhis, one develops the idea that "My view is superior, and I have obtained this samadhi through its power," and thus clings to wrong views as superior, so it is not a fault to become an afflicted one in this way. Considering it as four kinds of afflicted ones, this is in accordance with the Sautrantika school, as it is said in the Abhidharmakosha: "Four, named the Sautrantika, they are desire, view, pride, and ignorance." The Kashmirian Sautrantikas consider that for the afflicted ones, only the enjoyer in whom desire is dominant. Then, is this the dhyana of samadhi and the nature of formlessness? These are associated with desire and so on, so they are not the nature, and if they were, then all afflicted ones would excessively become samadhi, because there is no reason to distinguish. Therefore, this is only considered because it was previously the substance of samadhi, and is counted in the classification of the real substance of samadhi, but not because it is the nature. For example, a rotten seed was previously the object of a seed, so it is given the name of a seed. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha commentary: "How is an afflicted one dhyana? Because of inverted thinking. If it is excessive, then it is not, because only those of the same kind are given its name, like a rotten seed." Furthermore, this is undetermined, and for this and those branches, etc.
