The application of mind that causes joy, and the application of mind that causes sorrow through pervasive affliction, is the application of mind that gathers joy, which is the opportune moment to abandon the three intermediate afflictions. The application of mind that transforms into extreme delight and sorrow is, in sequence, desiring to abandon what is to be abandoned, and contemplating the faults of what has not been abandoned. When striving to abandon in this way, whether it be the cause or the place, when the pervasive entanglement of desire that hinders the practice of virtue does not arise, one might think: "Do I possess this but have not experienced it, or have I not experienced it because I do not possess it?" Then, by applying the mind to the aspect of suffering, when a longing for desire arises, one might think: "Is my mind not yet separated from attachment to desire?" To abandon the remaining objects to be abandoned, meditating on the aspects of tranquility and agitation, is the application of mind of discernment. When constantly examining what has been abandoned and what has not, in order to abandon the objects to be abandoned that have not been abandoned, the arising of the antidote to the three subtle afflictions of desire is the application of mind of ultimate application. However, this is only a temporary abandonment, not a complete abandonment, because the seeds have not been uprooted, as the worldly path does not have that power. Immediately following this, by the power of that, entering the actual state of the first dhyana and the arising of the application of mind that corresponds to the actual state is the application of mind that is the result of application. The second is: As stated in the Compendium of Topics, "Just as with the first dhyana, so it is up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception." However, in the common terminology of the Abhidharma, when initiating thought in the higher realms, the mind enters samadhi without interruption, therefore it is said that there is no thought-born in the higher realms, and no hearing-born in the formless realms. Thus, if one meditates relying on the formless realm, then the first application of mind has both hearing and thought, and if one meditates relying on the form realm, then there is no thought-born. Furthermore, from the near attainment of the fourth dhyana up to the near attainment of the peak of existence, because there is no feeling of joy and happiness there, the meaning of the application of mind that gathers joy is explained only as seeing the qualities of abandonment. The first application of mind of the near attainment of the first dhyana is the application of mind of the desire realm, and does not belong to the higher realms, as stated in the Hearer's Ground: The applications of mind of the unestablished grounds are all applications of mind of the desire realm.

To individually contemplate the arising of the coarse characteristics of the aggregates, and the arising of the peaceful characteristics of the first dhyana, is called individual discernment and attention. According to this reasoning, if one meditates on the basis of the lower realms, then the first attention should be considered the lower realm. The way these preparatory practices are established on the four paths is as follows: The Compendium says, "Individual discernment and aspiration attention are included in the path of accumulation. The two, extreme isolation and ultimate union, are included in the path of no interruption. Gathering joy is included in all four paths. Investigating attention is included only in the path of distinction." That is, the path of accumulation is the initial effort, the path of no interruption is the actual abandonment and antidote, the path of liberation is the experience of transformation immediately after abandonment, and the path of distinction is the accomplishment of qualities beyond that. Therefore, it is said that those attentions possess those qualities. Third, if, as it is claimed, the attention of the result of ultimate union is the actual basis, then the ninth liberation path of the preparatory practices is clearly pervasive with the actual basis. However, the Treasury masters claim that the ninth liberation path of the preparatory practices of the first three dhyanas has two kinds of arising, the nature of the actual basis and the preparatory practices, and that the ninth liberation path of the preparatory practices of the fourth dhyana and above is pervasive with the actual basis, as it says in the Treasury: "The meditative stabilization that transcends the three realms, or the liberation path at the end of the preparatory practices, or not the preparatory practices of the higher realms." Furthermore, the Treasury masters believe that the feeling of the preparatory practices is only equanimity, so the actual basis and preparatory practices of the first three dhyanas have different kinds of sense faculties of feeling, so it is difficult to transfer the faculties, but for the rest, it is certain that it is only equanimity, so it is thought that it is not difficult to transfer the faculties. Thus, the identification of the six preparatory practices of attention as described above is from the perspective of the worldly path being free from desire from the lower realms, but the number of those six is not fixed, since the uncontaminated paths of the path of seeing and the path of meditation rely on the first preparatory practices, and those two contradict each other in terms of being peaceful and coarse, and especially the path of seeing cannot be an antidote to the abandonment of desire.
