and possesses it. Sixth, how does one enter into the yoga of emptiness of inherent existence? Without fixating on the three—agent, action, and object—one enters into all phenomena like an illusionary being, through the gate of the complete purification of the three spheres. Seventh, those who practice in this way, striving for their own goals, enter into activities for the sake of the three great purposes. Eighth, those who strive for these purposes exert themselves to know the minds of others, and so forth, and thus enter into the six superknowledges. Ninth, those who have attained superknowledge, not having understood the many objects of knowledge, think, "Now I shall attain the wisdom of omniscience," and thus develop a strong desire to attain enlightenment, and therefore enter into omniscience. Thus, the characteristic of abiding correctly in those objects, these nine natures of entering, suppress or transcend all the phenomena of cause and effect of the Great Vehicle, and thus accomplish entry. The second part has two sections: the formless meditations and a detailed explanation of the immeasurables. The first part has four sections: what is the cause of attainment, what is the nature of what is attained, what are the signs of having attained it, and what is the person who attains it. The first part has three sections: explaining the means of attaining the first dhyana, showing that the rest are similar to it, and considering to which of the nine paths it belongs. First, in the Compendium it says: "One enters into the equipoise of the first dhyana through seven mental engagements. What are the seven mental engagements? They are: the mental engagement of thoroughly understanding the characteristics, the mental engagement arising from aspiration, the mental engagement of thorough isolation, the mental engagement of gathering joy, the mental engagement of investigation, the limit of application, and the mental engagement of the fruit of the limit of application." This is how it is explained. Here there are two: the determination of the number of mental engagements and the identification of each. First, why are seven mental engagements established? Because if one has not abandoned what is to be abandoned of the lower ground and has not attained what is to be attained of the higher ground, one cannot attain the actual state, therefore seven are established. Thus, from the three aspects of the cause, nature, and result of the path of preparation, for the first, to generate what has not been generated, there are two mental engagements. The first mental engagement makes the mind focus by knowing what is to be abandoned and what is to be attained, and the second initiates diligence for that purpose. Already generated,

This is done by the fifth attention, as it examines what has been abandoned and what has not, thereby completely removing the remaining to-be-abandoned dharmas. The second is the third, fourth, and sixth attentions, as they destroy the three lower-realm afflictions: great, medium, and small. The third is the seventh attention. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi: "Among them, with the attention of individually knowing characteristics, one fully knows what is to be abandoned and fully knows what is to be attained, and also directs the mind towards abandoning what is to be abandoned and attaining what is to be attained. With the attention arising from aspiration, one diligently engages in practice for the sake of what is to be abandoned and what is to be attained. With the extremely secluded attention, one abandons great afflictions. With the attention of gathering joy, one abandons medium afflictions. With the attention of conduct, one places the mind on the absence of manifest pride. With the attention of ultimate application, one abandons subtle afflictions. With the attention of the fruit of ultimate application, one experiences the fruit of meditating on those aspects." Secondly, first, desire is suffering that greatly increases and is not pacified, and is extremely short-lived; while the first dhyana is the opposite of that, being coarse and peaceful. Like this, attending in a way that mixes hearing and thinking is for the sake of distinguishing the different characteristics of the upper and lower realms, so it is the attention of extremely knowing characteristics. Like this, aspiring for a long time to the peace and coarseness of the upper and lower realms, thereby transcending hearing and thinking and reaching śamatha and vipaśyanā, is the attention arising from aspiration. Due to the power of long-term habituation, initially the path that abandons the three great afflictions of the desire realm will arise, and the attention that corresponds to the arisen path is the extremely secluded attention. When it has separated us from the afflictions of the desire realm and its related bad destinations, from then on one will like abandoning afflictions and the seclusion that comes from it. When we see both as beneficial and are touched by the small joy and happiness arising from seclusion, in order to be free from sleep, drowsiness, and agitation, one will feel very joyful from time to time.
