If it is thought that being without fault is merely the cause of Bodhi, then the vast lineage would also become like that, therefore there is no difference between the two, so it is said. So, what kind of Dharma-nature is considered as lineage? Regarding this, the Uttaratantra states: In general, the lineage is, the lineage of the Three Jewels, is the realm of all seers, that is also fourfold. Thus, it is also said that the four elements of Dhatu, Bodhi, qualities, and activities are all lineages. Specifically, like a treasure and a fruit tree, the lineage should be known as two types, beginningless self-nature abiding and, truly attained most supreme. Thus, among the two lineages mentioned, the self-nature abiding lineage exemplified by the treasure is, like a precious treasure contained within the mind, the immaculate and non-severed Dharma-nature is also, because of non-realization, the suffering of poverty, beings constantly experience various kinds of suffering. Thus, it is clearly stated that the Dharma-nature is free from severance. The second is that, in general, in the mind-stream of sentient beings, merely establishing the cause that can generate qualities and can eliminate obscurations as the lineage, the views of both Madhyamaka and Yogacara are consistent, and being able to eliminate is also because the defilements have become temporary. There are differences in the meaning of temporary, thus, the Madhyamikas believe that defilements are merely imputed by conceptual thought, and in reality, it is emptiness that is not established as a substance, therefore it is considered temporary. The Yogacarins believe that defilements are the other-dependent nature arising from the mind and mental factors, although they are nominally true, they are produced by improper attention that contradicts the reality of the aggregates, clinging to purity, happiness, permanence, and self, therefore, by refuting the object, it is possible to prevent its cause, and when it disappears, the attachment etc. that has become the result will also naturally disappear, therefore it is considered separable, so it is considered temporary. Therefore, the Madhyamikas believe that when realizing the emptiness of the mind's nature, which is not established as anything in essence, all illusory clinging in conventional terms will be pacified, and all illusory antidotes will arise. Therefore, from the perspective of the conventional, falsely imputing on the mind's nature, considering this is the self-nature abiding lineage. The Yogacarins believe that the mind's nature is luminous, in essence, at all times

Since it is accomplished and those defilements can be removed by the antidote, and as much as they are removed, all qualities will arise, therefore, it is considered that the nature of reality is the lineage because it is the basis of those two. The former seems to be the explanation of the Ornament for Clear Realization, and the latter seems to be the explanation of the Sublime Continuum. In this way, although they both consider the nature of reality to be the lineage, they differ in whether or not they accept the basis for purifying defilements as truly existent, so the reasons for establishing it as a lineage are also different. Therefore, in the context of Mind-Only, the statements that defilements have been exhausted from the beginning are said because they arise from the reason of inversion, only in terms of not entering into the reality, and they are not spoken of as merely names imputed by the mind, as those who speak of emptiness of inherent existence do, because that would be confusing. The characteristic of the latter system is that defilements are inexhaustible and unborn, so in this way, merely knowing that what is to be abandoned is without inherent existence is the designation of abandonment, but it is not accepted that what is to be abandoned and the antidote are truly existent as separate entities, but it is considered like a magical elephant defeating another magical elephant. If one does not understand that this extremely profound realm is taken as the conventional truth and fabricated and distinguished, but instead clings to it as being established in its own right, and some consider it to be one and others consider it to be different, etc., then for the many conceptualizations that appear, the result is only mental exhaustion. Third, the Lankavatara Sutra speaks of five types: the lineage of the three vehicles, the uncertain lineage, and the severed lineage. The latter is only in terms of being difficult to liberate, it is impossible for the lineage to be completely severed, because if defilements cannot be abandoned, it would follow that it is the nature of the mind, and if that were the case, it would be impossible to transcend samsara, like the heat of fire. Although it is said that the Mind-Only school accepts the severed lineage, it is only in some provisional sutras that such distinctions are made, and it is not their ultimate view, because if they accepted it, they would have to admit that obscurations cannot be abandoned, which is also unreasonable, because they accept that all defilements are adventitious. Fourth, as it says in the Ornament for Clear Realization: Qualities are to be known for the sake of liberation. Like this, qualities arise and originate from this, so it is the lineage. Synonyms for the name are: As it says in the Bodhisattva Ground: That lineage is also called the basis, the teacher, the cause, the support, the near place, the antecedent, and the place. Those who are sutras
