The answer to this will be explained later. The second point is that some people consider the grasping of ordinary beings as substance grasping and the grasping of noble beings as imputation grasping, regarding these two graspings as two different ways of thinking, and elaborating on the details of these two ways of thinking separately, which is extremely unreasonable. This is because in the objects of these two ways of thinking, there are many that are not any of these two graspings. In the Commentary, it says: "The so-called ordinary beings are those called 'persons,' who follow the customs of the world. What they consider to be substantially existent are those who are capable of accomplishing the function of true conventional truth, and are not like the false appearance of a double moon." The grasping is thinking: "This is true because it is manifest." And the scriptures also say: "Because the scriptures speak of actions, nature, and classifications." It means that ordinary beings are able to accomplish the function of true conventional truth, therefore they are substantially existent, and they are manifest. The reasons, actions, results, own-nature, and classifications of actions are all explained as reasons for grasping as substantial. Regarding the way of thinking of imputation grasping, it also says in the same text: "Noble beings are those who have been liberated from suffering, and liberation from suffering is only an imputation. For example, monks, these five dharmas are only imputations, which five? The past, the future, nirvana, separate cessation, and pudgalas (persons), these are only names." Therefore, the grasping is thinking: "This is true because it is established as existing only as a name." If there is not even a name, who would diligently practice the path? Therefore, the mere name can also infer the existence of noble beings. It means that noble beings are nirvana, and nirvana is considered to be imputedly existent, therefore noble beings are imputedly existent. If there is not even a name, no one would diligently practice the path, therefore the mere name can infer the existence of noble beings, this is the way of grasping. This is extremely unreasonable, because the later scripture says that nirvana is imputedly existent, and if noble beings are imputedly existent, then ordinary beings should also be imputedly existent, because this scripture says that all persons are imputedly existent. Both the root text and the commentary regard ordinary beings and noble beings as thinkers, not as objects of thought. Moreover, the Compendium also says:

What is an ordinary being? One who has not attained the noble dharmas is called an ordinary being. Thus it is established, and because it is said to be associated with conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, it cannot be expressed. A person is merely a conceptual designation, so both ordinary beings and noble ones are equally conceptual designations, and therefore there should be no difference between them in terms of real and conceptual entities. Fourth, there are four root divisions, and by dividing them by objects, each of them becomes nine times nine, so there are thirty-six. If divided by realms, there are one hundred and eight. Fifth, what is to be examined is necessarily the two, the grasped and the grasper, so there are also two discriminations for that. For the grasped, there are necessarily two, either the general characteristic or the specific characteristic of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, so there are two grasped discriminations. For the object of attachment to the grasper, it is necessarily real or conceptual, so the number of discriminations with that object is also fixed at two. This is the fixed number of the four root discriminations, and dividing each one into nine times nine is to accord with the thoughts of the disciples who are close to the retinue, but it is not a fixed number that exists in reality. If so, what is the reason for explaining that there are two types of grasped discriminations, one that takes each general characteristic as its object and one that takes only specific characteristics as its object? The former is explained to abandon the common attachment of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and the latter is explained to abandon the uncommon attachment of those of the Bodhisattva lineage. Sixth, the root discriminations follow the order of the four discriminations, and dividing them into nine times nine branches is merely for the sake of expression, and there is no other reason. Seventh, in the "Sunlight Sutra," it says: "Discrimination is in the aspect of the grasped, but not in the aspect of the grasper," and there are four possibilities. The first possibility is the six objects, such as form. The second is the consciousness associated with a single moment. The third is the suchness of another moment. The fourth is the Perfection of Wisdom that is free from those aspects. Thus it is explained. In its meaning, the former ones say: The first possibility is the discrimination of the six objects included in the dharma-sphere, excluding mental factors. The second possibility is the discrimination of the first moment of eye-consciousness that apprehends blue, for example. The third possibility is the discrimination of the continuum of that same eye-consciousness, which is grasping its own object, and the subsequent manifest consciousness takes that as its object, so that is the grasped. If so, in the second possibility also
