After doing that, upon seeing the Protector Maitreya (Maitreya, མགོན་པོ་བྱམས་པ་) who came from the realm of Tushita (Ganden, དགའ་ལྡན་), it was like the saying, "How to obtain the previous body, and with that secret instruction, the samadhi of the stream of Dharma was attained." Does Asanga (Thogme, ཐོགས་མེད་) explain it solely based on his own intellect, or also based on the oral instructions of the guru? If asked, it is not the former, but the noble one of gods and humans, and the ruler of the world, even the powerful one (Ishvara, དབང་ཕྱུག་) and the all-pervading one (Vishnu, ཁྱབ་འཇུག་), etc., cannot defeat Maitreya (Mipham, མི་ཕམ), for the sake of the protector of sentient beings, you yourself, that is, personally first listened, and then well thought about and meditated on its meaning, thereby making it stable. It is also said that in Tushita (Ganden, དགའ་ལྡན་), he listened to the Dharma for fifty years as a regent, while the ancient commentary of the "Categories of Things" says six months. At that time, the venerable one composed the Ornament for Clear Realization, etc., for the sake of Asanga (Thogme, ཐོགས་མེད་), which is widely known among the wise. As the Ornament of Light says: "It is also heard that the noble Asanga (འཕགས་པ་ཐོགས་མེད་) has understood the meaning of all the scriptures and attained realization, but regarding the many things that are repeatedly said, and the aspects that are not repeatedly said, he did not see the division of words one by one, and because of the profoundness, he could not infer the meaning of the Prajnaparamita, so he became unhappy. Then, for that meaning, he pleased the Bhagavan noble Maitreya (བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་འཕགས་པ་བྱམས་པ་), and composed the explanation of the Prajnaparamita Sutra, the treatise in verses of the Ornament for Clear Realization. After hearing that, the teacher noble Asanga (སློབ་དཔོན་འཕགས་པ་ཐོགས་མེད་) also explained it to the teacher Vasubandhu (སློབ་དཔོན་དབྱིག་གཉེན་) and others." The Moonlight Commentary says: "Because it is extremely profound, it is difficult for non-Bodhisattvas to understand, so with compassion, in order to make them understand, the noble Maitreya (འཕགས་པ་བྱམས་པ་) summarized it, and at that time, while abiding there, he clarified it with the treatise in verses of the Ornament for Clear Realization. To say that the noble Asanga (འཕགས་པ་ཐོགས་མེད་) composed it and did it later is the mistake of Simhabhadra (སེང་གེ་བཟང་པོ་) and others. To say that after doing it first, then recounting it, that is the saying of others." Such an explanation is unreasonable, because there is no other basis, and most of the wise are the same.

From the stories passed down from the past, it seems that only the former is apparent. Where is it? As it says, "The noble Asanga, with his renowned fame, clear intellect, and supreme wisdom, thoroughly explained and carefully elaborated on that very scripture." Regarding the saying "The Twenty Thousand Verses are indeed the definitive," it needs to be examined. Second, the way Vasubandhu explained it is: directly explaining it as "truly explaining." Where is it? As mentioned before. By whom? By the root and branches named Vasubandhu, who, by showing the immaculate path for beings to attain higher realms and definite goodness, fulfills the desires of beings. Where is it? As it says, "The teacher Vasubandhu, who is skilled in distinguishing between the real and unreal, and is arrogant with erudition, has gained a foothold in the commentary of the scriptures." Thus, in the commentary of the Twenty Thousand Verses. In what way? By relying completely on the view of the Mind-Only school, which believes that external objects do not exist, and all phenomena that appear as knowable objects are merely appearances of the mind, and that the nature of the mind itself is inherently established. The reason for this is that the teacher himself mainly inclines towards the view of the Mind-Only school, that is, he values it. Similarly, in the Prasannapadā it is also said: "The noble Asanga and the teacher Vasubandhu did not divide the Eight Thousand Verses into chapters, but explained the Mother Sutra in the end of the establishment of the Mind-Only school. Since the teacher Vasubandhu did not comprehend the view of the Great Vehicle Madhyamaka, therefore, the noble Asanga, who attained the Earth-Light, also explained it in accordance with taming him, and for the benefit of one sentient being, I will abide until the very end." Therefore, these statements were followed. The difficult-to-understand phenomena, as well as the Prajñābhava and Buddhagupta also explain it as Mind-Only. In the oral tradition, in the commentary of the Twenty Thousand Verses, the words of Nagarjuna are quoted as evidence to explain, therefore one cannot say that it contradicts his view. If one does not cling to Mind-Only, one cannot grasp the ocean of emptiness. Just as the Buddha held consciousness to be real, the way the noble ones explained the nature of consciousness is also provisional." And so on, after explaining these, relying on the inner knowable, Vasubandhu
