Both perception and conception are similar in engaging in eliminating objects, but the way they engage is different. Perception engages through the means of establishing, while conception engages through the means of eliminating. Moreover, the power of the object causes perception to generate appearance, and substances such as blue objects are apprehended without being divided into parts because they do not exist separately. Therefore, perception engages without contradicting superimposition, because even at the time of constant superimposition, impermanence is seen. If this were not the case, then all superimpositions would have to be cut off simultaneously. The habitual tendencies left by perception generate ascertainment, and this ascertainment must engage in contradiction to superimposition. Superimposition also wrongly enters the object, so when it is eliminated, its object must be cut off. Thirdly, the sound of saying "there is no pot," is it that the object of negation is the discriminated object that has been distinguished, or is it that only the independent establishment is the object? It should not be examined by those with conception, because from the mere utterance of the sound, the meaning of what is to be negated is actually cut off by the word. Thirdly, identifying other-exclusion includes: the definition of other-exclusion, its divisions, and establishing the way of conventional agreement. First, the object to be excluded is the dharma to be understood through the means of actually cutting off by words. Secondly, there are two types of exclusion: non-affirming negation and affirming negation. Among these, the latter is further divided into two types: mental exclusion and objective exclusion. For example, merely distinguishing all non-pots on a pot is non-affirming negation; the appearance of wrongly conceiving of non-pots is mental exclusion; and that which returns from non-pots is objective exclusion. In the face of the conception that apprehends a pot, if the general meaning of the pot appears as returning from non-pots, then must it become a negative form? If so, then all perceptions would also become negative forms, because objects appear as returning from different cognitions. The reason is that it only appears as unmixed. Therefore, even if it appears as returning from non-this, it will not become a negative form, because it also appears that way in establishing conception. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika, "For him, the entity is an external object, one seeing is seeing differently." Thirdly, when the name of a cow is conventionally assigned to a white forehead, the black sound

Regarding "uru" also being understood as a cow, both internal and external parties agree, but the reasons for understanding it as a cow differ. Externalists believe that names are applied to universals, and the universal is an indivisible one. Therefore, applying it to one means understanding all, otherwise it would not be so. If there is no uncommon difference and no common appearance between white and black, then white, relative to black and horse, has no difference of similarity or dissimilarity. How can black be understood as a cow, and it is unreasonable not to understand it as a horse. The self-school believes that on white, the exclusion of others that are contrary to not being a cow is applied, and that exclusion also pervades all appearances of cows without difference. Therefore, applying it to one means understanding all. If one admits the exclusion of others, one also admits the universal, but the intervention of sound discrimination has already been prevented. If one admits it, the necessity of a name is accomplished by the exclusion of others alone, so admitting a universal other than that is meaningless. Therefore, the object indicated by a name is: the meaning of the collection that is contrary to white and not being a cow. There is also no fault of mutually dependent discriminations, because the person who applies the name must separately determine the two meanings of cow and not cow by the power of direct perception. Second, regarding the method of determining the object of measurement as manifest, the reason for determining the valid cognition as two, and the determination of the result of valid cognition. First, when newly cutting off superimpositions on an object, one sees two things: taking the general characteristic as the object and taking the specific characteristic as the object. Because excluding the existence of anything other than these two, the way of measuring is established as two. Therefore, the valid cognition is determined as two, not establishing the two by means of inference knowing the general characteristic and direct perception knowing the specific characteristic. If that were the case, if it were a specific characteristic, it would contradict being hidden. Therefore, determining the ability to function and the inability to function as two is also because there are two ways of apprehending, so the valid cognition is established as two. Second, regarding the fruit of valid cognition, the first, second, and third distinctions, and the establishment of two kinds of consciousness. First, blue is the object of measurement, the appearance of blue arises, the awareness that does not newly deceive about blue is valid cognition, and the valid cognition that realizes blue is the result. This is commonly accepted by both the Sutra school and the Mind-Only school.
