The five qualities, such as those, are complete. Thus, the eyes and so on, which act for their own benefit, are, from the perspective of the outsider, transformed into a correct subject because they possess the five qualities, such as not being involved in establishment and refutation. If that is the case, then whether or not the proposition is correct must be determined by whether or not there is a valid means of proof. Therefore, if the eyes and so on act for their own benefit, they will also be established by a valid means of proof. However, even if there are things that have not been refuted by a valid means of proof from the perspective of the outsider, it is necessary to have not been refuted by a valid means of proof in general as a characteristic, so it will not become a correct subject. If it is asked, does the term "essence" require that it not be established by a valid means of proof in general, and does it not become a subject merely because it has not been established by a valid means of proof from the perspective of the outsider? If that is the case, then if it is the object to be proven by a correct reason, it must contradict being established by a valid means of proof. It is indeed the acceptance that if it is the object to be proven by a correct reason, then it contradicts being refuted by a valid means of proof. In the case of dissimilar types of subjects, the opponent takes two things as subjects: what is taken as a subject and what is not taken as a subject. The latter is eliminated by acceptance, and the former has two things: establishment and refutation. Those two are eliminated by essence and non-refutation. The particle and acceptance eliminate wrong conceptions. The second is the division of the nine types of subjects. The necessity of mentioning it is to know that the characteristics of a correct reason are definitely three: effect, nature, and non-observation; and that the characteristics are definitely three aspects; and that on the basis of the agent, object, and subject of dispute, all dissimilar sides have been completely eliminated. Therefore, the nine types of subjects are mentioned. Among them, in order to establish that the characteristics are definitely three, four are mentioned: two correct reasons and two opposites. That is, the reason of nature and effect makes it known as pervasive. In order to show that it is not reversed by mere acceptance, two correct reasons are established. Because if it is reversed by mere acceptance, then those two can also become contradictory reasons. In order to say that such a capacity to make known does not enter by mere acceptance, two contradictory reasons are mentioned. If it enters by acceptance, then those two also become correct reasons. Thus, when it is shown that the cause and the pervasive are reversed by the nature of things, and the effect and the pervaded are reversed by the power of wrong conceptions, then the negation of the unobserved cause and the pervasive reason is also necessarily extended. Thus, it is established that the characteristics of a correct reason are definitely three. Characteristics

In order to ascertain the three modes, two aspects of the property-of-the-subject are shown, namely, "For the sake of debate, both particular and general are pure." This refers to the fact that when showing the divisions of the property-of-the-subject, there is no dispute that the property-of-the-subject is a defining characteristic. Some argue that concomitance is not necessary, and that merely through the property-of-the-subject and the counter-property, it becomes a valid sign, like the uncommon one. To dispel this argument, by establishing that the counter-property is not confused with concomitance, it is shown that the mode of concomitance is necessary as a defining characteristic. Some argue that merely the property-of-the-subject and concomitance become a valid sign, like establishing that a pillar is impermanent through being measurable. To dispel this argument, by establishing that concomitance is not confused with the counter-property, it is shown that the counter-property is also necessary as a defining characteristic. In order to establish the scope of the sign by determining that if the sign is valid, it must necessarily be absent from the dissimilar class, three aspects of the property-of-the-subject are shown, namely, "The remainder is the establisher of the counter-property." This refers to first mainly establishing the counter-property, and then merely excluding the dissimilar class on the basis of the debate, thereby determining the scope of the sign. If merely establishing concomitance is sufficient to become a sign, then impermanence would become the sign of non-effort-born. If concomitance and counter-property are equal, then non-tangibility would also become the sign for establishing impermanence. If concomitance is strong and the counter-property is weak, then impermanence would become the sign for establishing effort-born. Therefore, it is necessary to mainly establish the counter-property pervasion. It is said that this is the "Stages of the Path of Valid Cognition" composed by the great King of Dharma, Tsongkhapa, and although it is without error, even if there is no colophon written by the master himself, it is undoubtedly the speech of Je Rinpoche. The three lords, Kyabgon Tsungme Dampa Yongzin Tri Rinpoche, have said this, so it should be regarded as a place of trust. Svasti! May the lotus garden of the Victorious One's teachings, fragrant with benefit and bliss, through the blossoming of the petals of explanation and practice, and the essence of the nectar of liberation, for the benefit of all beings, from the great Dharma center of Dege (Dege, Sichuan) Lhundrub Teng, spread this rain of Dharma! The Stages of the Path of Valid Cognition, composed by the Dharma King Tsongkhapa.
