The Arrangement of the Path of Valid Cognition, composed by the Great Dharma King Tsongkhapa. The Arrangement of the Path of Valid Cognition, composed by the Great Dharma King Tsongkhapa. The Arrangement of the Path of Valid Cognition, composed by the Great Dharma King Tsongkhapa, is complete. Om Svasti! Homage to the venerable lamas! Now, here, for one who engages in ascertaining the very nature of treatises on reasoning, the necessity of composing a treatise that shows the characteristics of valid cognition, the way in which that necessity depends on the treatise, cherishing the treatise that possesses that necessity, and ascertaining the nature of the subject matter of that treatise. The first has two parts: refuting wrong conceptions about the necessity, and showing the correct necessity. The first has three parts: refuting the wrong conception that it is unnecessary in relation to the pursuit of liberation, refuting the wrong conception that it is unnecessary in relation to the distinction of objects, and refuting the idea that although there is a necessity, it is considered inferior. The first has two parts: refuting the mistaken wrong conception that it is explained as a sophistical treatise, and refuting the mistaken wrong conception that it is explained separately from the treatises on inner science. The first is: Some say that these treatises on valid cognition are merely sophistry that cuts off external elaborations, so they are not closely needed for the pursuit of liberation, and such a thought is a great wrong conception. There are two types of sophistry: those who are external to this Dharma, such as the teachers who show the path to liberation from samsara, such as the sage Ring-skyes, etc., who conceive of grasping the very nature of things, and who establish the path to liberation merely by imputation, this is considered sophistry; and also in the Ornament for the Sutras, it says: "Sophistry is dependent and uncertain, not pervasive, mundane, and causes weariness; children are said to rely on it." Thus, the very nature is understood by relying on sound and signs, and although it is understood, it is uncertain because it changes, and it is not pervasive because the mind does not engage with all of what is and how it is, and because the very nature is manifested, it takes only the gross as its object, so it is an object of the mundane, and because courage is exhausted, it is a cause of weariness, possessing five characteristics, that very nature is taken as an object merely by speculation, this is established as sophistry. Because it is the former, it is not closely needed for the pursuit of liberation.

If it is said like that, the thesis is not established, because the Teacher, the Bhagavan, has completely understood all that should be known, and in order not to contradict the truth of the scriptures he has taught, it is in this treatise of reason that decisions are made. If it is said that because it is later, it is not necessary for those seeking liberation, then this statement is not established, because if it is so, then the heat of the path of application and so on must also cognize the object only by speculation. Therefore, it is not necessary for those seeking liberation. If it is so, then the path of seeing and beyond will arise without cause, and the wisdom of establishing such a thesis will also be unnecessary for those seeking liberation, because it is only speculation. The second view is that some say: These seven treatises are logic, not inner science, so they are not necessary for those seeking liberation. This statement is also cutting off the root of the path to liberation. Logic is: in order to establish one's own side, the means of proof, consequence, etc., and the ways of refuting the other side, etc., are the same as the famous terms in grammar and common agreement. Inner science, on the other hand, is the cause and effect of the undesirable aspects in the inner mind stream, and the cause and effect of cutting them off, whether it is the scriptures or the treatises, all that can understand these belongs to inner science. And here, what is mainly decided is the training of higher wisdom, so it is the Abhidhamma. Moreover, establishing one's own side is also determined by impermanence, selflessness, etc., through correct logic, so how can there be contradictions between inner science and logic? Therefore, only inner science, such as the Root Sutra of the Vinaya; both inner science and logic, such as the seven treatises; only logic, such as the famous treatises on grammar, which only show the ways of debate. Second, refuting wrong views in view of the difference of objects: Some say: In places where there are outsiders, in order to cut off wrong understandings of the teachings, treatises on valid cognition are needed, but in places like Tibet (now the Tibet Autonomous Region of China), such treatises are not needed. This statement is unreasonable, because the outsiders.
