It is not considered contradictory that there are four chapters in the Pramāṇavārttika, because the "Examination of Instances" and "Examination of Elimination" are both included in the chapter on self-benefit, while the "Examination of Refutation" is included in the chapter on benefiting others. The second chapter of the Pramāṇavārttika, if the valid means of ultimate truth, the yogic direct perception, is separated, it will fall into error, so it is included in direct perception. Moreover, when searching for the place of knowledge, one first relies on the completely pure valid means of determination. From this, the main point of the purpose of beings that must be determined is also actually determined by inference. And since inference depends on direct perception, if one follows apparent direct perception and apparent inference, beings will be deceived. Therefore, it is necessary to properly cut off such errors and correctly determine the characteristics of not deceiving beings. Determining the valid means is not done out of poverty, but from the Compendium of Valid Cognition, it is known that benefit and non-benefit, acceptance and rejection, are preceded by correct knowledge, so this treatise is composed to show it to those who are not skilled. As it is said, it is for the sake of accomplishing all temporary and ultimate benefits and completely reversing the accumulation of faults. Moreover, the root of the accumulation of faults is that the object of attachment to this is determined to be non-existent by the valid means, and the root of the accumulation of virtues must also rely on the fact that everything has been accomplished. Secondly, the method of determining the object to be measured by oneself, and the method of generating understanding in others, these two. First, identifying the object to be determined, and the method of determining it, these two. The first is that the capable Bhagavan (Shakyamuni Buddha) is established as a non-deceptive valid means for seeking liberation. Moreover, this is also known by proving that his teachings are without fault. Thus, in the Compendium, it is said: "The one who has become a valid means, wishing to benefit beings, the teacher, the Sugata, I prostrate to the protector." It should be known that the meaning of this sentence has two ways of being established, namely forward establishment and reverse establishment. Among them, forward establishment means that the teacher indicates the path from which he walked. If one wants to know how he walked, then the method of reverse establishment is to indicate how he walked. Moreover, the teacher is walking and protecting, and is the nature of possessing two perfect qualities. Moreover, unlike what the outsiders think, it is not a self-born valid means.
