It is said in the commentary on the four hundred verses of the Engaging in Discipline: If, when tormented by sorrow, happiness arises from delicious things, etc., but because suffering is powerful, it is overwhelmed, so that happiness is not experienced, if you say so. Then, how is the feeling of happiness that arises, how could it not be? Because it is not the nature of experience. If at that time only a small amount of suffering remains and exists. If there is a small amount of suffering, then how can such happiness be revealed, and it cannot be established as experiencing happiness? Thinking that this happiness does not eliminate gross suffering, does it? It is thought to be so. If the small suffering is only a small joy other than that great happiness, then even the small happiness does not go beyond the nature of that happiness, so if it is so, it must be happiness. If it is happiness, then on sorrow torment, etc. Wanting to avoid the faults of etc., if happiness arises from delicious food and drink, etc., the cause of happiness that is contrary to suffering arises, so suffering does not arise at that time, if you say so. Then, isn't it established that the feeling of happiness and suffering is clung to and labeled by conceptualization? It is thought to be so. Because just one food, by the power of conceptualization, becomes the cause of both happiness and suffering. Because feeling is not established as true, in order to counteract this clinging to the reality of feeling, meditate on this analysis of feeling as emptiness. The emptiness that arises from the field of analysis and investigation, Realizing it, and the samadhi that combines with it, that is, the meditation of calming and abiding, will cause the yogi's conceptualization to increase and expand, so it is called food. Just as food causes the body to grow and be free from disease, etc. Here, in the sutra quoted in the Compendium of Trainings, it is said: When a Bodhisattva meditates on feeling, mindfulness, close placement, etc., he will practice both ultimate truth and conventional truth. Among them, the practice of conventional truth is: When a feeling of happiness arises in one's own mind, compassion will arise for other sentient beings. That is, even if one's own feeling of happiness arises, because the realization of emptiness has destroyed all the clinging to the reality of it, so attachment to it will not arise. And because other sentient beings are not seen, so because it is seen that attachment arises from there, and the self of attachment.

Mere pleasure is like what is said in the Ratnavali, "Scratching the left hand is pleasure," which only appears to be pleasure. The ultimate of pleasure is the cessation of craving, as it is said, "Among all pleasures, the cessation of craving." Similarly, even when experiencing suffering, it should be connected with the arising of compassion, etc. To negate the true establishment of feeling by negating the true establishment of the cause of feeling, awareness. Contact is the coming together or meeting of the three, object, faculty, and consciousness, so it is to be negated. Since consciousness and meeting are negated below, here the meeting of faculty and object is negated. Among these, there are two, particles and gross matter. Since the meeting of the latter occurs below, here the meeting of particles is negated, namely: If the particles of the faculty and the particles of the object meet, is there an interval between them or not? If it is like the first case, then where will they meet? Since there is an interval, it is impossible to meet. If there is no interval, then meeting is also unreasonable, because they are one. Just as the folds of a garment must be one if there is no interval. The reason for this is: particles do not enter particles, that is, they do not penetrate, because those particles have no space and their volumes are equal. If one enters and penetrates the other, then the whole will also become just a particle. If there is no entering, that is, no penetration, there is no mixing, and without mixing there is no meeting. If there are no different parts, then how can it be reasonable to say meeting? If it is not reasonable, if you see that there is meeting and no parts, please point it out, but there is nothing to point out. Negating meeting with consciousness: Consciousness, etc., it is unreasonable to meet with it, because it has no body. Negating meeting with gross matter: Feeling, etc., since gross matter has no true existence, as mentioned before, it is also a collection of constituents. One should understand the analysis as it is explained. Thus, if contact as a cause has no true establishment, then from where does true feeling arise? Because it is impossible for truth to arise from falsehood, as it is said, "Whatever has a false seed." If feeling has no truth, then what is the purpose of laboring or striving for it? Because it is meaningless. If feeling has no truth, then the true establishment of suffering will not arise from which object harms which object. Feeling ceases craving.
