Firstly, the mindfulness of the body is "the body is" and so on. In the chapter on mindfulness of the body, the Compendium of Trainings quotes the Sutra of the Collection of True Dharmas, which says, "If the mere collection of limbs is the body, how can the body be an object?" The meaning is that the word "mere" cuts off that each limb of the body, other than those, is a body with limbs. As the sutra says, "Just as relying on the collection of limbs, it is called a chariot," etc., the meaning is that each limb and the collection are not a chariot. They are the chariot and the basis of designation, the designated object, and part and whole. If on one basis, part and whole, basis of designation and designated object are the same, then it contradicts that they are different. Moreover, since there is no chariot other than them, just as the collection of limbs is designated as a chariot, it applies similarly to persons, vases, and other dharmas. As it is said in the sutra, it should be understood here as well. Having done so, as it is said in the King of Samadhi Sutra, "How do you, with your perception, apply that same perception with wisdom to all?" First, one establishes that a person is without self-nature, thereby ascertaining no-self, and then applies that reasoning to other dharmas, thereby ascertaining no-self. And as it is said in the Collection Sutra, "In what way are all sentient beings understood, in the same way are all other dharmas understood." These will be well explained. If the aggregates are taken as the basis for the name of a person, then all that needs to be negated will not be excluded. If one only does a rough analysis of the no-self of a person and then separately searches for the no-self of dharmas, then these are not appropriate. Then, just as one negates self-nature by arising dependently, one also negates the self-nature of dependent designation, meaning that the body is not established by its own nature, because it is designated in dependence on the collection of limbs. Similarly, in the Garland of Jewels, etc., it is said that the aggregation of the six elements is called a person, which should be understood as referring to the designation of the aggregation. Here it says "the body is not a foot," etc., just as it was said before about the no-self of a person, the body is not truly established, because it is neither one with the limbs, nor is it different from them. The first reason is indicated by the first nine feet. The second reason is, if it is established

Etc. If it is said that the gross, part-possessing body is a different entity from the parts, then this gross, part-possessing body, different from the parts, would exist on the parts of the hands, etc. But where does something like a part-hand itself exist? Does it exist on all the parts, each occupying a portion, i.e., the hand is one part, the leg is one part, etc.? Or does the part-possessing thing exist completely and without deficiency on each part? If it is like the former, existing by each part occupying a portion, then the parts by which the part-possessing thing acts on the hands, etc., would exist on the parts of the hands, etc. But where does something like a part-hand itself exist? This would become endless, because something like a hand also exists on its own parts, the fingers, etc., and the fingers, etc., also exist on their own parts. If it is like the latter, existing completely on the hands, etc., then there would appear to be as many bodies as there are parts like hands, etc., because the part-possessing thing and the parts are different entities capable of occupying positions. If this part-possessing thing also exists completely and without deficiency on the hands, etc., then just as the parts like hands, etc., are perceived as multiple entities, the part-possessing thing would be the same. For both the external person posited by Buddhists and the internal agent person posited by non-Buddhists, the body is not established by its own nature. If that is not the case, how could the hands, etc., be established by their own nature? They are not. If that is not the case, how could the body be existent by its own nature? It is not. Therefore, although the body is not established by its own nature, by focusing on the hands, etc., and being deluded by the ignorance of true clinging, the mind that clings to the body as true arises. For example, just as the thought of a person arises in a scarecrow due to the special arrangement of dissimilar shapes, etc. As long as the causes and conditions of the scarecrow and dusk, etc., are assembled, the appearance of the thought of a person arising in the scarecrow will appear. Similarly, as long as the causes and conditions of the hands, etc., exist, the thought that appears as a body will arise in it. Thus, when analyzed by dividing into parts, although the body is not established by its own characteristics, due to the power of the ignorance of true clinging, the true clinging that thinks "this is a body" arises, just like the above example. Because the hand is imputed on the collection of limbs and fingers, how could the hand be something that is truly established? It is not.
