Commentary on the Wisdom Chapter of the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Opening the Eye of Intelligence Commentary on the Wisdom Chapter of the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Opening the Eye of Intelligence Here begins the Commentary on the Wisdom Chapter of the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Opening the Eye of Intelligence. I respectfully prostrate to the venerable and holy ones. Here, in engaging in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, one first generates the aspiration for supreme Bodhi. Following that, one takes vows through the ritual of taking the engaging mind, and trains in conduct. The ninth chapter teaches how to train in the wisdom that realizes suchness, that is, the higher seeing that realizes suchness. The connection of this chapter is that it shows the order of generating wisdom. The commitment of the four lines beginning with "limbs" is that of "suffering" and so forth, that one should generate the wisdom that completely realizes the selflessness of phenomena, not merely blocking the gross self of phenomena. Why? Because one desires to pacify the suffering of samsara. The pervasion is known from "as long as there is clinging to the aggregates," and so forth. If one does not block the subtle object to be negated, but merely realizes the common selflessness of persons, is it not possible to attain liberation? Merely realizing the common selflessness of persons is sufficient to perfect the selflessness of persons, and by habituating to it, one attains the nirvana of the Lesser Vehicle. However, to attain Buddhahood, one must meditate on the selflessness of phenomena, which is agreed upon by all schools that assert selflessness, down to the Svatantrika Madhyamikas. Here, it is necessary to explain according to the system of Acharya Chandrakirti, and one must learn from others. The proof of the commitment is "limbs" and so forth, All the limbs are explained in two ways: one is to explain them as merely the calm abiding explained from the eighth chapter, and the other is to explain them as all the remaining perfections such as generosity from before. If one applies it to the connection of just the two previous and subsequent chapters, then the former is also fine, but here it is better to explain it according to the latter. The doubt that "the limbs such as generosity are taught for the sake of wisdom" should be cut off as follows: it is not necessary for generosity and so forth to precede the realization of suchness through hearing and thinking. In general, it is necessary to accumulate merit to realize emptiness, but in this life, it is not necessary for the conduct of a Bodhisattva as described here to precede it, just as Acharya Shantarakshita explained two ways of establishing emptiness through hearing and thinking. The experience of turning the mind towards emptiness
