Just as it prevents the arising of the discriminating mind that clings to existence as real. The meaning of negating causelessness is summarized in the two verses beginning with "Therefore." Having negated the assertion of causelessness as stated in "Not from self, not from other," etc., and then negating arising from self and other, is "individually," etc. That is, the individual or aggregate cause does not arise from itself. It is to be understood from the Madhyamakavatara, which says, "It is not reasonable for what has already arisen to arise again, for it has already arisen." Regarding not arising from other, it is also to be understood from that same text, which says, "If another were to arise dependent on another..." Negating the belief that the three times are real is "from other," etc. That is, coming from another place and time, as well as abiding, and the present past phenomena, are not real. Whatever is close to whatever, etc., is that conditioned phenomena arise if there is a cause; if there is no cause, they do not arise. For example, like an image, etc., how can there be reality in such a fabricated thing? Because fabrication depends on others. To explain those meanings in detail, negating true arising is "for things to become existent," etc., as in the Mulamadhyamakakarika, "Things do not arise from themselves, nor do they arise from others, not from both, not without a cause; therefore, it is known that there is no arising," etc. What does not exist is unchangeable, that is, what does not exist is established by its own nature. How can that nature that has abandoned its state be a thing? Because it is not a thing. Because in the causal state, it is established by its own nature as non-existent. If what did not exist before does not newly become a thing, then what other thing becomes a thing? There is none, because in the causal state, the arising of what exists is not observed. If it does not become a thing when it does not exist in the causal state, then when will a thing become existent? It will not become existent. Thus, if a thing has not arisen, it is unnecessary, because its essence does not separate from what did not exist before, and if it does not separate from it, then the occasion for a thing to exist is impossible. Negating true cessation is "things," etc., which is easy to understand. The fault of not understanding reality is "oneself," etc., the rest is easy to understand. Thus, in order to keep in mind the rough meaning of the words of the chapter on wisdom, not to forget it in other lives, this notebook written by the glorious lama, the all-knowing Tsongkhapa, may it in all lives
