Therefore, it is said that liberation is attained through familiarizing oneself with that meaning. Refuting the real establishment posited by others, i.e., "whose," etc. According to the realists (Vaibhashikas), it is very difficult for these two, object and consciousness, to truly exist, because there is no proof for it. If it is said that the real existence of the object is established by the power of the real existence of consciousness, then what is the basis for the real existence of consciousness itself? There is none. Therefore, if the two exist by depending on each other, then neither will truly exist. If there is no father, then there is no son, because there is no cause from which the son arises. Without a son, there is also no father, because the father himself is also a son. Therefore, just as the two must be established in dependence, so too, these two, object and consciousness, are equally non-existent in truth. If it is said that a sprout arises from a seed, and from the sign of the sprout one can understand the real existence of the seed, i.e., one can infer it; similarly, since the consciousness arising from the knowable truly exists, one can infer that the knowable truly exists. Why can't one understand that consciousness truly exists? One must understand it. If it is said that the existence of the seed is understood by a consciousness other than the sprout, then from what is it understood that the consciousness that understands the knowable exists? That is not established, because self-understanding has already been refuted, and it is not accepted that it is understood by others. In order to show the reason for the absence of true establishment, refuting the proponents of causelessness, i.e., "for a while," etc. The Vaisheshikas say: "Just as the root of the lotus is beautiful, long, and sharp,..." and say: "No one made it, it arose from its own nature." That is unreasonable, because worldly perception sees that most of the internal and external causes are accompanied by following and ceasing. The color of the lotus stem and the number of petals, etc., are produced by the differences in those causes. Then who made the differences in the causes? That too arises from the differences in its own previous causes. Why can a cause produce an effect? It arises from the power of the previous cause, which has no beginning. The Lokayatas say: Ishvara is the cause of beings. Then please say what Ishvara is? If it is said that the great elements such as earth, etc., increase and decrease, causing the effects to increase and decrease, therefore the elements are Ishvara, then that is just a name, what is there to argue about?

It is merely arguing over names. However, if it is considered that Isvara is the entity, then the refutation of that is: Earth and so on are the subject of dharma. That is not Isvara itself, because it does not possess the characteristics of Isvara. Isvara is one, but earth and so on are many; Isvara is permanent, but earth and so on are impermanent; Isvara moves by giving precedence to thought for the purpose of producing fruit, but earth and so on do not have that, so there is no movement; Isvara is considered a god, but earth and so on are not gods; Isvara is not measurable by feet and so on, but earth and so on are measurable; Isvara is pure, but earth and so on are impure. If you say that space is Isvara, then, space is the subject of dharma, it is not Isvara, because it does not move for the sake of fruit. The permanent self is also not Isvara, because it (the self) is both matter and consciousness, which has already been refuted before. If you say that Isvara is an inconceivable creator, so there are no those faults, then, what is the use of saying that Isvara is the creator? It becomes meaningless, because it is not an object of thought. Moreover, it is also unreasonable what fruit Isvara wants to produce. Whether its fruit is the self and happiness, or earth and so on, or the entity of the later life similar to Isvara itself, whatever you think it is, are those permanent? Because they are permanent, they cannot be the fruit. Therefore, knowledge arises from the knowable, and pleasure and pain arise from beginningless karma, so tell me, what does Isvara create with what fruit? If the cause, karma, etc., do not have a beginning, then the fruit also does not have a beginning. Why does Isvara not always produce fruit? It should always produce fruit, because it does not depend on other causes to produce fruit, because it (Isvara) is permanent. If the fruit does not arise because there are no co-operative conditions, etc., then, what other conditions will Isvara depend on to produce this fruit? It should not depend on other conditions, if other conditions are needed, then those should also be done by Isvara, so there are no other conditions that Isvara must do. If Isvara exists, but does not produce fruit, but relies on other conditions, then, the collection of other conditions itself is the cause, not Isvara, because when the conditions are gathered, the fruit...
