Because what has the earth element done to that self that it is not the holder of the earth? Because it has no change. Since that is the case, you have admitted that that self is without consciousness, and you have also denied that it has consciousness, because it is separated from the agent and the object, so it becomes taking space as the self and admitting it. In order to avoid the argument that if the self is not permanent, karma and its result are not reasonable, here are the argument and the answer. First, if etc., there are four lines. If the self is not permanent, then the relationship of karma and its result, where the agent experiences the result, is not reasonable, because the agent disappears after creating the karma, then whose karma does that karma become, and who will experience the result? The answer is: action etc. The basis of action, the agent, and the basis of the absence of result, the experiencer of the result, both of these are established in both your son and my son. Because when you accumulate karma, you also do not want to experience the result later. The two selves at that time are also not existing at the same time, one as the agent and the other not existing, but both are established. Since the previous self does not exist in the later time, then it is meaningless to argue here that karma and its result are not reasonable, is it not? Yes, because that fault also applies to you, because it is impossible to see that the one with the cause has the result when accumulating the cause. So what is your own tenet? It is to show the agent and the enjoyer of the result through the continuum and the collection, no need to say more. The continuum of collection is the basis of imputation of the person, not the intrinsic nature, which should be understood from other sources. The past mind is not the self, because it has passed and is no longer the object of the mind. The future mind is not the self, because it has not yet become the object of the mind, so it is not an object, and I also admit that it is the basis of experience, memory, etc. If someone says that the present mind that has arisen and has not ceased is the self. Then, for the present mind, the two previous and subsequent minds are also established by their own characteristics, and are different and unrelated things, just as the previous moment disappears in the later moment, and the self that is the same as it also disappears, so there is no self in the later time. Thus, summarizing the meaning of determining the emptiness of the person, for example, etc., has been said before. If one realizes the emptiness of the person, it is easy to refute the intrinsic establishment of what is mine, so it is summarized in the Root Wisdom and other treatises.

Just as it was said only that much, not saying those here is also to negate the self, thinking that this is easy to refute. If sentient beings are not truly existent, then since there are no sentient beings, to whom should compassion be directed? For the sake of the fruit of cultivating compassion and learning the path, etc., the sentient beings who are postulated by ignorance, which has been accepted, exist, so there is no fault. If the ignorance here is the ignorance of being ignorant of the person and phenomena, then what is postulated by it is not even established in name, so it should not be accepted. One might wonder what it is. As it is said in the Madhyamakavatara, it is from the delusion of the unpostulated appearance, it is the thought of "I." The so-called ignorance is the particular consciousness that has not turned its mind towards selflessness. The person postulated by it is only "I." If sentient beings are not truly existent, then the fruition Buddha is also conscious, and who is experiencing the result? Those are not truly existent, that is true, the rest can be known from the previous. Then, what is the reason for previously blocking ignorance along with its object? It is because pride, which is the cause of suffering, that is, ignorance being ignorant of the two selves, will increase suffering, so it must be blocked. As it is said, "Here, the cause of suffering, the thought of truth, should be reversed." Like that, even from reversing ignorance, one cannot reverse the clinging to truth, that is, one cannot reverse it, and even if one can reverse it once, will it also revert like the perfections of samsara? The reason why it can be reversed is: the clinging to self is inferior, and meditating on selflessness is superior to it, because focusing on the same object, the way of clinging is contradictory. If that is the case, then which of those has validity? That is what harms others. As it is said, because selflessness has previously been established by valid cognition, the realization of selflessness has the support of valid cognition. Second, extensively explaining the selflessness of phenomena. Explaining the selflessness of phenomena from the perspective of the four mindfulnesses, in general, the four mindfulnesses mentioned in the Hinayana Sutras do not even fully show the selflessness of the person, let alone the selflessness of phenomena. The four mindfulnesses mentioned in the Mahayana Sutras have two aspects: showing the selflessness of the person and showing the selflessness of phenomena. Here, it is spoken from the perspective of the latter.
