Therefore, they must pervade each other. Otherwise, it is irrelevant as a sign to establish the number in this way. Therefore, do not say that the meaning of the first sign is that it must be similar, i.e., common, and dissimilar, i.e., non-common, because if it is a self-character, then it seems to be a statement that it is contradictory to commonly follow many of its own appearances. Do not say that it must be the object of apprehension of the mind that appears to be similar to the common, and the object of apprehension of the mind that appears to be dissimilar to the common, because even if it is a general characteristic, such as the mere exclusion of a vase by the Mind-Only school, it will not become the object of appearance of conceptualization. The exclusion of a vase by the Mind-Only school, which appears as a vase, is the object of appearance of the conceptualization that grasps "that is the absence of a vase." But it is not the object of appearance of the conceptualization that grasps "absence of a vase, absence of a vase." The appearance of the conceptualization that grasps the absence of a vase, i.e., the elimination of the mind, is taken as the actual sound meaning of expressing the absence of a vase, and through the power of expressing the absence of a vase, it is understood that the exclusion of the absence of a vase, i.e., the mere exclusion of a vase by the Mind-Only school. But the exclusion of the absence of a vase will not become the actual sound meaning. Therefore, as it is said in the scriptures, "It is understood from the sounds, others are understood by exclusion." Even if it is said that by making what appears to be similar as the object of apprehension, new imputations are cut off, and by making what is dissimilar and non-common as the object of apprehension, new imputations are cut off, it may be mistaken for the statement that "the object to be measured must be two, because the valid cognitions must be two." Therefore, the object to be measured, the phenomenon, the number of self-character and general characteristic is definite, because it is not due to the power of its own establishment by its own nature that it becomes the object of apprehension of the mind, but it is established merely by the conceptualization that appears to be similar to the common, and due to the power of its own establishment by its own nature, it becomes dissimilar, i.e., non-common or unmixed, and appears as a clear object of apprehension of the mind, so the number is definite. The "ཉིད་" here is a definite grasp. Regarding the second sign, do not say that it must be the actual object of sound and the non-actual object, because the non-actual object of sound does not exist. Also, do not say that in the ultimate sense it is the object of sound and the non-object, because in the ultimate sense there is no object of sound. Therefore, the expressing sound

merely serve as contributing factors, but cannot fully manifest the complete essence of the self in the mind, and that which merely does so cannot fully manifest the complete essence of the self in the mind, because it is determined as these two. It means that to appear completely does not necessarily mean that all the characteristics of the essence will appear. The third reason is that if there are causes other than the object, such as symbols, etc., even without the object, self-grasping consciousness will arise; the opposite explanation should not be done like that, because consciousness without an object is impossible. If there are other reasons, even if the object itself is not the cause, consciousness that clings to it will arise; if the object itself is not the cause of that consciousness, even if there are other reasons, it will not arise, and it should not be explained like that either, because the apprehended aspect is not suitable as the cause of the experiencer-grasper. For example, like the consciousness of Ishvara, when there are other reasons, consciousness exists. The meaning of this sentence is that merely because there are reasons other than the object, such as symbols, effort, and attention, there is consciousness that realizes itself. Also, the meaning of connecting "even if there are other reasons, consciousness does not exist" is that even if there are other reasons besides the object, such as sense faculties and attention, if the object itself is not established from the perspective of the way things exist, self-realizing consciousness will not arise, because it is determined as these two. There are other explanations about hiding the sun, etc., but they are not written down, and the one just explained is good. These three reasons, and the reason previously explained that is determined as being able to function and not being able to function, any one of these four reasons can establish the two aspects of self and general, so what is the need to explain four reasons? The first reason is to determine the nature of the object of measurement as these two kinds of reasoning, and then among these two existences, if the object of measurement is not able to function, then it is shown as if it is merely established by the conceptual thought of mixing self-nature. A phenomenon that is merely established by conceptual thought, for the consciousness that arises from hardness, etc., can fully manifest the nature of the self, as shown by the object of sound. Like that, the nature of the object itself, because of the way things exist that is established in a way that can withstand scrutiny, will not appear in the mind, and only because there are other causes such as symbols and attention, will it appear in the mind. "When there are other reasons, consciousness
