That which is established as amenable to analysis by its own nature, without depending on any assumption. The characteristic of conventional truth is that it is established merely by the fact that its own nature is posited by sound conceptualization. The Sautrāntika's view is that what exists ultimately and ultimate truth are coextensive and identical, and that what exists merely conventionally and conventional truth are coextensive and identical. The Yogācāra school does not accept this, and this will be explained later. Even so, what exists ultimately and what exists conventionally are the objects to be expressed, so it is meaningless to posit them as the characteristics of the two truths. The difference between the valid cognitions of ultimate analysis and conventional analysis in the Sautrāntika school, and the way in which the selflessness of persons cannot be posited as ultimate truth, will be explained in the chapter on yogic direct perception. Regarding the way of explaining these debates and answers arising from this, according to the teacher Ornament Master: "Whatever is ultimately able to perform a function, that is what exists ultimately here." Saying this is only a temporary acceptance of the views of other philosophical schools, and is not true, because if analyzed with reason, there is not even a slight thing that is established as truly existing. To prove this, here it is prevented that either the side of permanence or impermanence functions ultimately, and similarly, it has been extensively explained that neither the side of knowledge and the knowable, nor the side of existence and non-existence, functions ultimately. Therefore, the Ornament says: "Therefore, the entities of cause and effect do not exist. For that very reason, if everything is powerless." This is said, and its meaning is that, as with the many reasonings previously explained that prevent ultimate functioning, there is no cause and effect ultimately. If there is no cause and effect ultimately, then all internal and external things will become powerless to produce results. In the commentary on "The Sun Hidden," it is also said: "If everything is powerless?" and the explanation is done as before. This argument was not made by the Madhyamikas, but by someone else standing aside, like a realist who thinks that if things do not truly exist, they must be completely non-existent. To this, the Madhyamika himself replies: "Seeds, etc., for sprouts, etc., power is seen." Its meaning is that what is seen

Having understood the meaning, I am convinced that these cause-and-effect phenomena exist, because I particularly believe that harmless seeds, etc., are capable of producing sprouts, etc. Therefore, particular belief is the basis for all establishment. This is the explanation. If this is conventional, then how could it be so? If it is said that particular belief is the establisher, then everything established by particular belief alone should be considered to be conventionally established. Because seeds and sprouts, etc., cannot be determined by a valid cognition that proves their true existence, but are determined by the valid cognition of vision. If it is thought that they exist only on the conventional level, then how can they be non-deceptive? This is reasonable. If it says "if" etc., it is also taken as one's own view, not as the previous view. The teacher Nyima Sabba also explains it in this way. Even so, the teacher's actual intention seems similar to the way Lhawang Lo explains it, my supreme omniscient one says. Although both Madhyamaka Prasangika and Svatantrika do not consider truly existent objects to exist in conventional truth, Svatantrika considers things to be established by their own characteristics. Prasangika does not admit that things are established by their own characteristics, even in conventional truth. Svatantrika believes that things are not established by relying on the mind's designation, but are established only by the way the object itself exists, and if so, it will become truly established. It is not contradictory that things can be established by their own nature and also be established by relying on the mind's designation. Therefore, Shantarakshita and his son believe that the author of the Seven Treatises' own fundamental view is based on Madhyamaka, and that most of the reasoning for determining the exclusion of others and signs, etc., in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, is taken as reasoning common to Madhyamikas. Ornament and Nyima Sabba, etc., also explain the self-view of the Commentary on Valid Cognition as Madhyamaka, assuming that Madhyamikas do not contradict the acceptance of self-characteristics. Prasangikas believe that in conventional truth, all phenomena are not established by their own nature, but are merely designated by names and concepts, so self-characteristics are not established even in conventional truth. Therefore,
