It is not permissible for a third category of valid cognition that is neither of the two to not exist. That is, in general, there are many ways of determining number, such as determining the number of types, determining the number of contradictory objects, and determining the number based on the need to eliminate wrong conceptions. Here, it is the latter. In this case, the wrong conceptions to be clarified here are two: the conception that valid cognition is only direct perception, and the wrong conception that there is a third valid cognition, such as a valid cognition that is different from both direct and inferential cognition. Here, the way to eliminate those two wrong conceptions by establishing the determination of the number of valid cognitions is: since it is established that the number of valid cognitions is two, it is established that inferential cognition exists, so the wrong conception that there is only direct perception is eliminated. If the existence of a third category of valid cognition that is different from direct perception and also different from inferential cognition is not refuted, then the determination of number will be damaged, so it must be refuted, and when that itself is refuted, the wrong conception of conceiving of many numbers is eliminated. That is, in order to establish the determination of number, it is generally necessary to refute the uncertainty of being two, although the number is determined in the eighteen elements, but all of the remaining seventeen elements are the element of dharma. There are many such things, but here, it is necessary to refute being two, and preventing not being two is the main thing in eliminating wrong conceptions, and that is affirmative in the nature of negation with respect to contradiction, meaning that there is no valid cognition that is different in nature from both direct and inferential cognition. Therefore, here, if a valid cognition that is different in nature from both direct and inferential cognition arises, then the determination of number will be destroyed, but the third category of contradiction that is neither of those two is the contradiction of valid cognition, and the valid cognition of the tantra of Ishvara, the valid cognition of the tantra of offering, etc., will not destroy the determination of number here, so that way is a child's wrong conception. Here, the virtuous friend Chapa says, after examining whether the two, direct and inferential cognition, are different in nature or the same, or different in negation, or different in contradiction, the nature is one, and the contradiction is different, but not the first two, the reason why the nature is one is that the subject, inferential cognition, is the same in nature as direct perception, because the self-awareness direct perception experienced personally is the same in nature. If it is the same in nature as the particular, then it must be the same in nature as the general, so the pervasion is established, he says.

It has already been said above that admitting the difference of negating one thing is extremely unreasonable. For example, a pot, should be the subject of the proposition, its essence should be the same as a non-pot, because its essence is the same as the form aggregate. Impermanent phenomena, should be the subject of the proposition, its essence should be the same as permanent phenomena, because its essence is the same as the self-nature that is separated, and so on. Many such reasons cannot be determined, because the reasons are too far-fetched. Therefore, those two cannot be established as having the same essence. Here, the root argument is written because it is necessary to write the way to write an argument that has become a correct reason, so it is very important to study how to do it, and a random argument is the behavior of a fool. Most of them are determined to be two kinds of valid cognition, perception and inference, because the object to be measured is determined to be two kinds, self-characteristic and general-characteristic, they say. Is this saying a correct reason? Or is it saying a similar reason? You yourself do not want to admit the latter. If it is the former, then what is the phenomenon that you want to understand here? If it is the knowable phenomenon, then write: Knowable phenomenon, it is certain that it is those two kinds of valid cognition. If you say that, then, knowable phenomenon, sound is impermanent, if you write it like this to establish that sound is impermanent, what will happen? Just the knowable phenomenon is not the subject of the debate when sound is permanent or impermanent, and because the proposition is taken as the dharma to be established, it contradicts the correct reason. If you say that, then, the same should be said for the former, is it not the case that being determined as two kinds of valid cognition is not what is to be established here? Or, valid cognition, should be the subject of the proposition, you are determined to be two kinds, perception and inference, because your object to be measured is determined to be two kinds, self-characteristic and general-characteristic, if you write it like this, then, sound, should be the subject of the proposition, you are not impermanent, because you are not produced, what will happen if you write it like this? The word 'you' must refer to the subject of the proposition, sound, so it has the same meaning as taking sound as the impermanent dharma to be established. If you say that, then, here too, the word 'you' must refer to valid cognition, so it also becomes taking the proposition as the dharma to be established. If you think that, for the scriptures, even if you write the argument to establish your own proposition like that, you don't need to admit that it is a correct reason, then, for what is taken as a reason, it is not necessarily a correct reason and not a correct reason, so it becomes necessary to admit that there are three situations of contradictory things, and even if you write the root argument like this, you also admit that it is pervasively a wrong reason, and then, the following scriptures.
