When a reason is determined as a subject with the mode of certainty by valid cognition, and the pervasion is apprehended in the manner of a property of the subject, then afterwards, the non-confusion of the previously apprehended reason with the established property is recalled again. That is, if the non-confusion apprehended by the three aspects of valid cognition is not recalled again, then because the inference that realizes the established does not arise, such is the meaning. This states that after the three aspects have been determined by valid cognition, relying on the recollection that "sound is produced, and whatever is produced is pervaded by impermanence," the valid inference that realizes "therefore, sound is impermanent" arises. It is not said that there are two: the general apprehension of pervasion and the apprehension of pervasion on the subject. And the valid cognition that apprehends pervasion and the inferential knowledge that recalls pervasion, the valid cognition and inferential knowledge that apprehend the property of the subject in the expression that explains the mind that apprehends the reason, are also shown as the mind that apprehends the reason. Thus, the valid cognition that measures the three aspects of a correct reason, and the inferential knowledge that recalls the three aspects drawn by those valid cognitions, etc., should also be done as the mind that apprehends the reason in that combination. If asked: How should the sutra, which says, "The knowledge of the reason is not the actual cause of inference, because it is interrupted by recollection," be interpreted? Answer: This does not show that only the mind that apprehends the reason and the inference of the subject are interrupted by recollection, but rather it shows that the valid cognition that measures the three aspects and the valid cognition that measures the established are interrupted by the knowledge that recalls the three aspects. Therefore, the Commentary on Valid Cognition says, "From that, the knowledge of inference does not arise, but the non-confusion with what is to be established exists only from recollection, and the nature of that recollection is the reason." This explanation says that the reason interrupted by recollection is the combination close to generating inference. So it is said. If asked: It is unreasonable to say that the mind that apprehends the reason is within the category of seeming perception, because the mind that apprehends the reason also has perception. Answer: There is no pervasion at all. Whatever is the mind that apprehends the reason is all seeming perception. In the treatises of the two Lords of Logic, there is not even a hint of it. The conceptual thought that apprehends the reason is seeming perception.

It is merely said to be apparent. Subsequent inference arises from inference. The reason why it is said that "it arises from inference" is that the conceptualization that grasps the sign is the cause of inference, so it is named inference. It is not the case that the actual inference is named by the term "arising from inference," because the sign-possessor, the actual inference, exists. If someone says that it is unreasonable to name mere realization of the Great Vehicle as Prajñāpāramitā, because the realization of the Great Vehicle also has the characteristics of Prajñāpāramitā, and so on, there are so many that there is not even a little pervasiveness. Therefore, merely the conceptualization that grasps the sign is named inference, and within that, there are both inference and analytical wisdom. Therefore, it is reasonable that grasping only the nature of the basis and negation of the sign, such as what is made and smoke, is not allowed as a sign-grasping mind. Smoke is not grasped by its own nature as what is made, but it is grasped as not arising without what is to be proven. This is what he said. Here, "not arising without what is to be proven" means that it does not arise without the dharma that is to be proven. As it is said in the Compendium of Valid Cognition, "What is to be inferred here is the dharma that possesses the distinction of what one wants to know." As he said, considering the understanding of the specific situation, he often only says that the subject is what is to be inferred and the dharma is what is to be proven. Therefore, do not take any occurrence of the word "what is to be proven" as the actual what is to be proven. Furthermore, one should think like this: If, in order to prove that sound is permanent, what is made is posited as a sign, then is the valid cognition that ascertains that what is made exists in accordance with the way it is posited on sound the sign-grasping mind that proves that, or is it not? It is not, because it is not the cause of the sign-possessor inference that proves that, because the sign-grasping mind is said to be the cause of the sign-possessor inference. If that is the case, then the property-of-the-subject of that proof should not be ascertained by valid cognition, because the valid cognition that ascertains the property-of-the-subject is said to be the cause of inference. The valid cognition that ascertains the property-of-the-subject of a correct sign is said to be the cause of the inference that realizes what is to be proven, but it is not said that if it is a valid cognition that ascertains the property-of-the-subject, it is necessarily its cause. The sign-grasping mind of a correct sign is said to be the cause of the sign-possessor inference, but it is not said that if it is a sign-grasping mind, it is the
