Because it cannot be established by direct perception (pratyakṣa), it must be established by a means of valid cognition that measures them by taking them as objects of generality, in a hidden manner. Therefore, for faculties and so on, inference (anumāna) itself must be considered a means of valid cognition. Because any means of valid cognition, as long as it is without conceptual thought, can directly measure its own object of measurement, its own self-character. Because a consciousness that has become without conceptual thought does not apprehend its own object of measurement as an object of generality. To dispel the dispute of those who assert many means of valid cognition, there are two: dispute and answer. The first is: In the Sutra on Valid Cognition, it says: "If one apprehends colors and so on with aspects such as impermanence, and does not apprehend them at once, what is the reason?" Having explained the meaning of the stated dispute, and stating the view of others: If I divide the object of measurement into two, self-character and generality, then color will not be understood as impermanence. Because it is a third object of measurement, a mixture of the generality of impermanence and the self-character of color. The mind that understands it will become a means of valid cognition other than direct perception and inference. Because it is not understood directly, and because it does not rely on a sign, it is a measurer. Previously, having seen a sandalwood fire inside a room, and later seeing smoke coming from that room from outside, thinking "There is a sandalwood fire in this room," this is called "the means of valid cognition of seeing a particular." This is a means of valid cognition other than direct perception and inference. Because for that mind, the sandalwood fire is hidden, so it is not direct perception. If combined with your view, then because the relationship between the smoke as the sign and the fire as the property to be proven, especially the sandalwood fire, is not understood by a means of valid cognition. Because he said: "At that time, the knower follows, understanding it as the nature of generality." Therefore, because there are more than two objects of measurement, there must be more than two means of valid cognition. Therefore, the number of three means of valid cognition will also not be eliminated, because there is a third object of measurement, a mixture of self-character and generality, which is different from the two objects of measurement. The number of one means of valid cognition will also not be eliminated, because multiple means of valid cognition apply to one object of measurement. For example, both the means of valid cognition of seeing a particular and direct perception apply to the same self-character. Therefore, because the objects of means of valid cognition are not determined separately, direct perception can also measure generality.

It is said that doing so will not eliminate falling into error. Here, even the outsiders do not distinguish between the general and the specific characteristics, so it is understood that whatever is general is considered a specific characteristic. Therefore, it is said that color will not be understood as impermanent. So, my teacher, the all-knowing one, said that the place where the outsiders are easily confused, the Tibetan logicians are also mostly easily confused. Second, the answer to this is, in the Pramāṇasūtra: "Therefore, for thorough combination is valid cognition, others do not exist. Repeated cognition is also not, because it will become endless, like memory, etc." This comes from the root translated separately by Zhama Sengyal. The self-commentary, translated by Marthong Dapa Sherab, explains the first two lines: "Although there is such clinging, however, therefore, for thorough combination, valid cognition, others do not exist. From the characteristics of self and general, grasping these colors, etc., which are not names, the general characteristic is that colors, etc., are impermanent. Therefore, through consciousness, thoroughly combine impermanence, etc. Therefore, it is not another valid cognition." The meaning of what is said here is that, among the self-characteristic and general characteristic of the impermanence of color, from these two, grasping the color self-characteristic, which is not a name, that is, not a sound meaning, and the impermanent self-characteristic, as the object of manifestation. Afterwards, the general characteristic that appears in the mind itself, clinging to it as if it were a substrate in the way of mistaking it for the color self-characteristic, and clinging to it as if it were an attribute in the way of mistaking the general characteristic that appears in itself as the impermanent self-characteristic, so it is said that color is made, therefore it is impermanent, thoroughly combining impermanence itself and colors, etc., through consciousness. Therefore, it is not another valid cognition that combines the color self-characteristic and the impermanent general characteristic, this is a clear explanation of the meaning of the explanation. The self-commentary of the last two lines says: "Repeated cognition is also not, because although it is not once, but separately determining that thing itself, even so, it is not another valid cognition. Why? Because it will become endless. If it is thought that all cognition is valid cognition, then valid cognition will become endless, like memory, etc.
