The explanation of how two objects determine the two valid cognitions, and what kind of wrong conceptions are eliminated by establishing them in this way: From "manifest and hidden" and the following six sentences, the meaning of the words is easy to understand. Among them, the characteristic of the manifest, which is done by others, is: the object to be measured, which can cut off superimposition by the power of experience; the characteristic of the hidden is: the object to be measured, which must cut off superimposition by the power of reasoning. For someone, if an object becomes manifest, it will not become a hidden object; if it becomes a hidden object, it will not become a manifest object. Therefore, these two objects to be measured are established according to the current state of the knower, and they are contradictory to each other. However, according to different people, or different states of the same person: an object that is manifest to someone may be a hidden object to others; an object that was hidden to the same person in the previous state may become manifest in the later state. Therefore, the definitions of manifest and hidden may be confused. Therefore, "it is manifest, because it is manifest to Devadatta" and "it is hidden, because it is hidden to Yajnadatta" are not pervasive. This reason is clearly explained in the commentary of the deity. For example, after the pot is removed, there is no pot above the clean ground. In this way, by the power of direct perception of the ground, the superimposition is cut off by the power of experience. This "no pot" is the manifest object to be measured, and this sense consciousness is the direct valid cognition for "no pot". Sound is impermanent, the self-characterized sound is impermanent, this is recognized by inference. The real object to be measured by inference is hidden. Therefore, do not think that the manifest pervades the self-characteristic, and the hidden pervades the general characteristic. Here, if we express the detailed analysis in the commentary of the deity in an easy-to-understand way, it is: for an object that is manifest, it means that for the consciousness that directly measures the self-characteristic, it has a unique way of appearing. Therefore, other objects besides this are hidden. If the conceptual consciousness also takes the self-characteristic as the appearing object, then for the conceptual consciousness, these self-characteristics become manifest, and the manifest and hidden will not contradict each other. Even if the self-characteristic is taken as the object to be grasped by the conceptual consciousness, the self-characteristic itself...

If it is said that because it is not realized through the colored sense faculty, it will not become manifest. When the sense consciousness apprehends a non-hidden object, there is nothing more than apprehending it by taking the self-characteristic as the object of apprehension. Then, for what reason does it become non-manifest because it is not realized through the colored sense faculty? If that is the case, then happiness and so on should also become non-manifest. Because it is not realized through the colored sense faculty, but is manifestly realized by the aspect of apprehending its own nature. Furthermore, if conceptual thought also takes the self-characteristic as the object of apprehension, then the eye faculty becomes meaningless when looking at forms, thus pointing out the fault of the sense faculty being meaningless. What was said earlier, "The sense faculty is meaningless," this fault is different from "The object itself is not that entity," and so on. If it is the same to apprehend by taking the self-characteristic as the object of apprehension, then the difference between clarity and obscurity is also unreasonable, so it is also unreasonable to think that the sense faculty is with results because the form appears clearly. Therefore, all conceptual thoughts are illusions born from the imprints left by experiencing things. As Lhawang Lo said, "Other than that, the substantial sense faculty has passed away." In the commentary on "That," after detailed analysis, these words clearly and extensively deny that the self-characteristic is the appearing object of conceptual thought. Now, in order to explain the reason for such a definite number, we will explain the refutation of arguments, which is divided into two parts. First, the refutation of the argument of the proponent who claims a small number. The Tirthika says: What does not exist as an entity is not measurable, just like the objects of the other world. Therefore, the measurable object and the name are only one, and the valid cognition and direct perception are only one. If you say so, then we also admit that the measurable object that can fulfill the needs of a thinking being, that is, that can produce the function of benefit and harm, is only one self-characteristic. Even so, are you certain or uncertain about the reason that non-entities are not measurable? If you are uncertain, then the reason given to prove what is to be proven is meaningless. Therefore, you yourself are uncertain about the pervasion that non-entities are not measurable, and you must admit that the valid cognition that ascertains it is other than direct perception, and that sense direct perception cannot directly ascertain it, all of which appear in sequence.
