Although they may seem similar, among these two, only inference should be established as a valid means of knowledge (pramana). Although it may err in its appearing object, it is a non-deceptive knowledge with respect to its object of fixation, the self-characterized sound impermanence, because it functions in accordance with how it measures it, and through its connection with that function. Just as there is a difference between the two examples in whether or not they are valid means of knowledge, saying that both meanings are lacking is not to correlate the examples with the meanings. Although it is a delusion, the mere difference of whether or not it can obtain meaning through the self-characteristic is used as an example to represent only one aspect. Thus, since the object to be measured is determined to be both the self-characteristic and the general characteristic, it is necessary to establish that the valid means of knowledge are determined to be both direct perception and inference. After explaining the definitions of the self-characteristic and the general characteristic in detail, now, taking the definitions of the self-characteristic and the general characteristic as the object of apprehension, the object to be measured, that which is measured, is determined to be both the manifest and the hidden, therefore the valid means of knowledge are also determined to be two. Therefore, in explaining the definition of the two valid means of knowledge, for any knowledge, from the power or strength near the object of apprehension of the self-characteristic of meaning, if there is such an object of apprehension, then the mind that has the concomitance of existence when it exists and the negation of non-existence, in the manner of the object itself becoming manifest, to that object engages in independent apprehension, that is, engages in apprehension through the power of the object, this is called direct perception. Through this statement, taking the self-characteristic of meaning as the object of apprehension, for the manifest object to be measured of Raga, it is explained that the newly non-deceptive knowledge is direct perception, and the object to be measured that independently engages in imputation and elimination by the mind of concomitance and negation arising from the power of the object is manifest. For that which engages in apprehension from the power of the object, other than that object to be measured or self-characteristic, the nature of the self, which is now beyond the senses and not directly seen, cannot be realized by a valid means of knowledge in the manner of independent apprehension, the basis for realizing it needs to rely on other reasons. What kind of reason is it? If the reason relies on the subject of the property, and has the three characteristics of being established with a connection of non-arising without the property to be proven, then at that time, the reason itself is the knower of the property to be proven. And the separative function of the word "ni" implies that if it does not have the three characteristics, then it is not a knower. That reason

So, how does one understand what is to be proven? For example, when smoke makes one understand fire, from the perspective of smoke as the knower, in both the subject and the similar example, only the nature of the general fire that is commonly concomitant is understood, not the understanding of the uncommon characteristics of fire, such as being bright, burning, and originating from sandalwood, etc. Therefore, all hidden things can only be understood through the measure that relies on signs, understanding only their general nature, and not distinguishing them by their respective unique, non-common modes of abiding. Thus, from the aspect of the property of the subject that has a relationship of non-arising without the sign, for the basis, the subject, there arises a wisdom that newly proves the property to be proven, which is called inference. The measure that proves and measures the object to be measured, the hidden thing, is definitely that one alone. From "Other than that, real" to "cannot be understood," the meaning of the definition is explained in detail. Therefore, this treatise declares that relying on the sign with three characteristics, the new and non-deceptive knowledge of the object to be measured, the hidden thing, is the definition of inference as a valid measure. Explaining it in this way, previously in the second chapter, "not deceiving the object to be measured" was explained as the definition of a valid measure, then, for the object to be measured, in what way is it not deceiving through the way of measuring? These two ways, here in a definite way, become the definition object to which the general definition of valid measure applies, and because the general and specific definitions of valid measure that apply to it are determined, it becomes a component of understanding the definition of valid measure in a completely pure way. Therefore, (Aryadeva) said, "If it is said that showing numbers and so on is meaningless when showing the definition of valid measure, then it is not so, because it has the meaning of a completely pure definition." And Dharmakirti said, "Is it not only the definition of correct knowledge that should be shown separately? What is the use of its number? Yes, if the classification that is excluded by the ultimate of clarity and difference is not shown, the definition cannot be shown specifically, therefore, because it is a component of showing the definition, the distinction of types is expressed through the way of number." Thus it was said. After explaining it in such detail, the established meaning is summarized as:
