Since being functional pervades being a self-character, these established by various kinds of reasoning extensively establish the pervasive relation of establishing the measurable object as being definitely two, self and general, by signs such as being definitely functional or non-functional. Although the general character is not a thing, it shows that it can be distinguished by relying on things, etc., such as real and unreal, etc., in nine aspects. The need for teaching in this way is not just to know the number of distinctions, but because it shows how to distinguish by means of dependence. Although the general object of appearance is not a thing, it is said that the way to distinguish by means of dependence, including the cutting off of doubts, is for the purpose of being able to cut off the superimposition on the self-character of the object of clinging that is relied upon through what, and to be able to realize that self-character. That the measurable object is definitely explained as two is not to say that the general character, like the self-character, exists independently as a measurable object, but to show that it is divided in this way by the distinction of how valid cognition realizes it. One's own characteristic is the only measure. And so on. Those who think that this text shows that the general characteristic is not a measurable object are mistaken about the Dharma. If the general characteristic is not a measurable object, then direct perception cannot be established. Because according to that view, inference must not be established as the basis. Because whatever sign is posited, the relation between the sign and the property, and the reverse of the pervasion, and the reverse of the sign and the property to be established, etc., are all general characteristics, so it must be assumed that it is not a measurable object, so it must be said that there is no correct sign. In this way, existence and non-existence must be determined by the perception and non-perception of valid cognition, even if it is not a measurable object of valid cognition, no one can say that it exists. Therefore, that view is that valid cognition is only direct perception and the measurable object is only the self-character, which is still the doctrine of the Tirthikas, without any change. Therefore, for those who are more eminent than ordinary people and have the ability to think, and for the benefit to be taken in the next life and beyond, what is the benefit to be generated and what is the harm to be abandoned? What is the cause of those things to be abandoned and taken? If they are allowed to think, then such thinking will arise.

It is said that the object of measurement, as the basis, is only its own characteristic. Like this, whether or not there is the ability to produce benefit and harm, through examination, those with realization, for the sake of benefit and harm of what should be taken and abandoned, because its function is established only on its own characteristic. For the general characteristic, is there not also an examination? Why is only its own characteristic the object of measurement? Because the examination of the general characteristic is also based on its own characteristic. Outsiders hold the general characteristic as the object of the general characteristic concept, and claim that such a general characteristic has a function in some aspects, or does not have a function, which is an examination following things. If it has been determined that it does not exist at all, then the examination for pursuing the result is completely meaningless. The valid means of measuring the unreal object of measurement is also to realize the main goal pursued before, as a branch of discrimination, which is urgently needed for those with realization. If it is not like this, then in order to realize the desire of a woman pursuing sexual love, taking the eunuch as a special basis, examining the good or bad of its appearance, is the same. Therefore, This is what is said in this treatise, and what Dharmakirti said that both valid means are objects of things, its meaning should be understood in this way. If the subsequent inference is to measure its own characteristic, then it cannot be universally acknowledged, because if so, then it will be impossible to establish the subsequent inference that proves non-affirming negation, because on the basis of the dharma to be known, the object of negation, the dharma to be negated, is separated, and through the power of measurement, whether directly or indirectly, if the self-characteristic is projected into consciousness, then it can only measure non-negation, and there is no meaning of measuring non-affirming negation. The subsequent inference based on that reason, for the dharma to be known of that reason, neither direct perception nor subsequent inference is reasonable, therefore, the self-characteristic of the object of negation becoming a valid means is also unreasonable for it. If it is said that the object of negation is a valid means, then the subsequent inference that realizes that the aggregates are empty of the self of a person must become the valid means of the self of a person on the aggregates, therefore it is too excessive. Here, saying that the cessation truth is its own characteristic is extremely wrong, which will be explained below. As said in the Ornament, the previous treatise considers the object of measurement in the ultimate sense to be
