Because it does not exist. Thus it is said, and the commentary of the gods also says so. Thus, the general idea of a pot appears in the mind as something different from what is not a pot, and although it itself does not possess the nature of a thing, we consider that the very appearance of mistaking it for reality and clinging to it is the general characteristic. Moreover, this should not be considered a thing, because the mere appearance of illusion is false. That mind is an illusion, because it sees many different pot appearances and substances as common, that is, as the same kind, as if their own natures were mixed together. This is the meaning of the commentary of the god-endowed wisdom. To prove that the object of that mind is false: The appearance of the general mind, as the subject, is not of the nature of truth, because it is merely an appearance tainted by habit, and because, in reality, it does not actually exist as it appears. Therefore, we do not admit that, in the absence of truth, it should be described as being either the same or a different entity from its own appearance. Although the Vaisheshika school considers the general appearance to be a different entity, we do not admit this, nor do we admit that it is the same entity as the Samkhya school, which is merely expressing our own view, and not saying that they are the same or different, because they have no truth. If one were to state the reason as "because it has no truth," that would not be good, because there is no true nature, because it has not been proven that the appearance and the substance are the same or different. Having just written that, if it is written here in the same way, and both can be accepted as correct reasons, then in the case of the Madhyamikas, it would also be necessary to admit that the correct reason for proving separation from the true single or multiple by the reason of "absence of truth" is also correct. To refute this: Even if the general characteristic of a pot is neither the same nor different from the appearance and substance of a pot, but because some general characteristics like that of a blanket can be described as different entities, we consider it to be a thing. If one's own appearance is neither the same nor different from things, then it should not be considered a thing. For things, in any case, that is, no matter what thing is referred to, must necessarily be able to be described as being the same as or different from that thing. Although the general characteristic of a pot and the general characteristic of a blanket cannot be described as different entities, there is a reason why they appear to be different entities in conception.

Because the appearance in conceptualization is due to the habit of the proximate cause, which ultimately leads to the reason why the pot and cloth are different, so in conceptualization, these two universals appear as if they were different substances, and are merely nominally designated as different substances. The outsiders say that the use of the word 'universal' and the wisdom of 'universal' is because that dharma has the characteristic of being a real entity of the universal. Therefore, it is unreasonable for the real entity of the universal, which is the object of the wisdom of the universal, not to exist. If you say so, then the use of words and wisdom for past and future things is also because the real entity of the universal of those things exists as a characteristic in those things, which is a fault, i.e., 'past and' etc. To this, if it is said, 'Admit it from the nominal designation,' in order to refute this fault, it is said that for the pot and cloth that do not exist now, the difference between whether the word 'pot' is used as a name or not is unreasonable, thus revealing the fault, i.e., 'any' etc. If it is said that the name of the thing that exists in the object to be expressed is the necessary name, and the name of the thing that does not exist in the object to be expressed is the nominal name, this is the reason. Then, by establishing the difference between these two names, what is the fault, and by what is it established, revealing through examples, i.e., 'wisdom is' etc. three verses. The difference between the real and nominal designation of the chief, etc., is merely stating the fame of the famous itself, which is also to reveal the contradiction in the promise. The third reason for proving the unnecessary characteristic of the universal is to prove that the appearance of the wisdom of the conceptualization of the present pot is not real either, by the sign of the conceptualization and appearance of the destroyed past pot being the same, i.e., 'when destroyed, the word' etc. This is also the same indistinct appearance, but the appearances related to the time before and after are different. The two 'aspects etc.' are dissimilar examples. The real entity of the universal is taken as a separate entity as the object to be taken, therefore, refuting the fault of the same appearance, indicating that it is not because it has been previously prevented, i.e., 'universal only' etc. four. Although the Vaisheshika school believes that the appearance is seen first, and then the grasping of the universal arises, they believe that the use of words and wisdom for the appearance depends on seeing the universal. The Samkhya school says that because the universal of the object to be taken does not exist in the real thing, it is not the same as the real thing, but all appearances are the nature of the chief of the universal.
